Analysis of Python's operating mechanisms

I've been using Python for my purposes for a short time. I have a question about the implementation of the language itself. I'll start with the unclear points in order:

  1. Python, as far as I understand, is written in C. But what does Cython mean then? Is it the same thing?
  2. If it's written in C, how is it interpreted? I have a guess that each line is compiled separately and immediately executed, is that correct? Can I read the source code somewhere?
  3. There is information on the internet about the Python virtual machine. What is that? I know Java has one. But Java is not an interpreted language. After compilation, you get bytecode, which is then interpreted on the fly by the JRE for the specific machine. But there's no JRE equivalent here... Or is there?
