Compiling an application for operation in high radiation conditions: protection against failures
Hello everyone. I am developing an embedded system in C++ for a space satellite that will operate in low Earth orbit. The radiation level there is very high, and as I understand, it can cause memory failures (bit flips) and even in processor registers. My C++ code is compiled with GCC for ARM Cortex-M4.\n\nThe problem is that standard error handling methods (try-catch, assert) do not protect against hardware failures. For example, if radiation "flips" a bit in a variable storing an important status flag, or in the code itself (in Flash), the program may start behaving unpredictably. I have already encountered situations where calculations produce incorrect results, and sometimes the program simply freezes or goes into HardFault.\n\nHere is a simplified example of my code where I calculate a checksum
