The built-in function is exactly what you need!
It returns tuples with the index and the next element:

>>> seasons = ['Spring', 'Summer', 'Fall', 'Winter']>>> list(enumerate(seasons))[(0, 'Spring'), (1, 'Summer'), (2, 'Fall'), (3, 'Winter')]
