What is the Java Standard Library?

The Java Standard Library (JSL), also known as the Java Class Library (JCL) or Java API, is a set of ready-made classes, interfaces, and methods that are shipped with every installation of the Java Development Kit (JDK) or Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Unlike third-party modules, this library does not need to be installed separately — it is always available for any Java application.

Why is the Java Standard Library needed?

JSL provides developers with a powerful foundation for building applications without having to write low-level code from scratch. It covers virtually all aspects of programming: from working with collections and strings to network communication, multithreading, and graphical interfaces. Using the standard library speeds up development, increases reliability (since the code has been tested by millions of developers), and ensures cross-platform compatibility.

Main packages and functions

The library is organized into packages (similar to modules in Python). Here are the key ones:

  • java.lang — basic classes: String, Math, System, Thread, Object. Imported automatically.
  • java.util — collections (List, Map, Set), dates, random numbers, Scanner.
  • java.io — data input/output (files, streams).
  • java.net — network communication (URL, sockets).
  • java.sql — interaction with databases via JDBC.
  • javax.swing — creating graphical user interfaces.

Java code example

Below is a simple example using java.util (list) and java.io (writing to a file):

import java.util.ArrayList;import java.util.List;import java.io.FileWriter;import java.io.IOException;

public class StandardLibraryExample { public static void main(String[] args) { // Using java.util.List List<String> languages = new ArrayList<>(); languages.add("Java"); languages.add("Python"); languages.add("JavaScript");

// Using java.io.FileWriter try (FileWriter writer = new FileWriter("languages.txt")) { for (String lang : languages) { writer.write(lang + ""); } System.out.println("File successfully written!"); } catch (IOException e) { System.err.println("Input/output error: " + e.getMessage()); } }}

When to use the Java Standard Library?

JSL is suitable for any Java project — from console utilities to enterprise web applications. It should be used whenever you need:

  • Working with data collections (lists, dictionaries).
  • String and file processing.
  • Network communication (HTTP requests, sockets).
  • Multithreading (Thread, ExecutorService).
  • Working with dates and time (java.time).

If JSL functionality is insufficient (for example, for web frameworks or working with JSON), third-party libraries (Spring, Jackson, etc.) are added. But you should always start with the standard library — it covers 80% of typical tasks.
