What is tracing?

tracing is a powerful framework for structured logging, profiling, and monitoring of Rust applications. Unlike simple loggers (like log), tracing allows you to create hierarchical spans and events with context, which is ideal for tracking requests, transactions, and asynchronous operations.

Why is monitoring needed in Rust?

Rust applications are often used in high-load systems where performance and stability are critical. Without monitoring, you will not be able to:

  • Track slow requests
  • Find memory leaks or panics
  • Understand why a microservice crashed

tracing solves this problem by providing tools for collecting metrics, tracing, and logging in a single API.

Installation

Add to Cargo.toml:

[dependencies]tracing = "0.1"tracing-subscriber = "0.3"tracing-appender = "0.2"

For advanced monitoring (OpenTelemetry) use tracing-opentelemetry.

Main Features

  • Spans — time intervals with context (e.g., processing an HTTP request).
  • Events — points in time (e.g., an error or warning).
  • Structured fields — passing data in key=value format.
  • Async support — correct operation with tokio/async-std.
  • Export to OpenTelemetry — integration with Jaeger, Prometheus, Grafana.

Rust Code Example

use tracing::{info, error, span, Level};use tracing_subscriber;

fn main() { // Logger initialization tracing_subscriber::fmt() .with_env_filter("my_app=info") .init();

// Creating a span (e.g., for an HTTP request) let root = span!(Level::INFO, "request", method = "GET", path = "/api/users"); let _guard = root.enter();

// Logging with context info!(user_id = 42, "Processing request"); // Error with fields error!( error_code = 500, message = "Internal server error", "Error fetching data" );

// Automatic exit from the span when _guard is dropped}

When to use?

  • Microservices in Rust — tracing requests between services.
  • High-load APIs — finding bottlenecks.
  • Async applications — correct logging in tokio.
  • Real-time systems — latency monitoring.

tracing is the de facto standard for monitoring in the Rust ecosystem. It is used in projects such as Tokio, Actix-web, and Warp.
