Introduction to Laravel Framework
Laravel is a modern, powerful, and elegant web framework for the PHP language, designed for developing web applications of any complexity: from simple blogs to corporate portals and API services. Created by Taylor Otwell in 2011, Laravel quickly gained popularity due to its expressiveness, clean code, and rich ecosystem.
Laravel solves many typical web development tasks: routing, authentication, database work, caching, queue processing, email sending, and much more. The framework uses the MVC (Model-View-Controller) architectural pattern, which allows separating application logic, presentation, and data, making the code more organized and maintainable.
Why Laravel?
- Fast development: Built-in tools (Artisan, Blade, Eloquent) speed up application creation.
- Security: Protection against SQL injections, XSS attacks, CSRF tokens, and other vulnerabilities.
- Scalability: Support for queues, caching (Redis, Memcached), and horizontal scaling.
- Community: Huge community, many packages (Packalyst, Laravel Nova, Spark), and detailed documentation.
- Testing: Built-in support for PHPUnit and Pest for writing tests.
Installing Laravel
To install Laravel, you will need PHP version 8.1 or higher, Composer (package manager for PHP), and a web server (Apache/Nginx) or the built-in PHP server for development.
Step 1: Installing Composer
If Composer is not yet installed, download it from getcomposer.org or install it via the terminal:
# For Linux/Macphp -r "copy('https://getcomposer.org/installer', 'composer-setup.php');"php composer-setup.phpphp -r "unlink('composer-setup.php');"sudo mv composer.phar /usr/local/bin/composer
# For Windows — download Composer-Setup.exe from the official websiteStep 2: Creating a New Laravel Project
Use Composer to create a project:
composer create-project laravel/laravel example-appThis command will create an example-app folder with all the necessary files and dependencies.
Step 3: Starting the Development Server
Navigate to the project folder and start the built-in server:
cd example-appphp artisan serveBy default, the application will be available at http://localhost:8000.
Quick Start with Code Example
Let's create a simple route and controller that returns a greeting.
1. Creating a Route
Open the file routes/web.php and add:
<?php
use Illuminate\\Support\\Facades\\Route;
Route::get('/hello', function () { return 'Hello, Laravel!';});2. Creating a Controller
Use Artisan to generate a controller:
php artisan make:controller GreetingControllerIn the file app/Http/Controllers/GreetingController.php, write:
<?php
namespace App\\Http\\Controllers;
use Illuminate\\Http\\Request;
class GreetingController extends Controller{ public function greet($name) { return "Hello, $name! Welcome to Laravel."; }}3. Updating the Route
Modify routes/web.php:
use App\\Http\\Controllers\\GreetingController;
Route::get('/greet/{name}', [GreetingController::class, 'greet']);4. Testing
Navigate to http://localhost:8000/greet/John — you will see: "Hello, John! Welcome to Laravel."
