What is Symfony and why is it needed?
Symfony is a powerful, mature, and one of the most popular component-based frameworks for the PHP language. It is designed for creating web applications, from small websites to complex enterprise systems. Unlike monolithic frameworks, Symfony is built on the principle of modularity: it consists of a set of independent, well-documented, and reusable components (libraries). You can use either the entire framework or individual components (for example, only the HTTP request or routing component) in any other PHP project.
Why is it needed?
- Accelerated development: Symfony provides ready-made solutions for common tasks: routing, database work (via Doctrine ORM), templating (Twig), authentication, form handling, caching, and much more. You don't need to reinvent the wheel.
- Structure and maintainability: The framework enforces a clear architecture (MVC — Model-View-Controller), making code organized, predictable, and easy for other developers to maintain.
- Reliability and security: Symfony has built-in protection mechanisms against common vulnerabilities (CSRF, XSS, SQL injection). It is used by giants such as Drupal, phpBB, and many enterprise projects.
- Community and ecosystem: A huge community, thousands of ready-made bundles (extensions), excellent documentation, and long-term support (LTS versions).
- Flexibility: You can start with a micro-framework (Symfony MicroKernel) for APIs and gradually add the necessary components as your project grows.
Installing Symfony
Unlike Python (where pip is used), PHP uses Composer for dependency management. Installing Symfony consists of two stages: installing the installer itself (Symfony CLI) and creating a project.
1. Installing Composer
If you don't have Composer yet, download and install it from the official website getcomposer.org. It is a global tool for PHP.
# Check Composer installationcomposer --version2. Installing Symfony CLI (recommended)
Symfony CLI is a convenient tool for creating, managing, and running projects.
# Installation on macOS/Linux (via curl)curl -sS https://get.symfony.com/cli | bash
# Installation on Windows (via Chocolatey)choco install symfony-cli
# Check installationsymfony --version3. Creating a new project
Use the symfony new command to create an application skeleton.
# Create a full web application (with Symfony Flex)symfony new my_project --full
# Create a micro-application (for API)symfony new my_api_projectIf you don't want to install the CLI, you can use Composer directly:
composer create-project symfony/skeleton:"7.0.*" my_project# Or for a full application:composer create-project symfony/website-skeleton:"7.0.*" my_projectQuick start with a code example
Let's create a simple "Hello, World!" page using Symfony.
1. Create a controller
A controller is a PHP class that processes a request and returns a response. Create the file src/Controller/HelloController.php:
<?php// src/Controller/HelloController.php
namespace App\\Controller;
use Symfony\\Bundle\\FrameworkBundle\\Controller\\AbstractController;use Symfony\\Component\\HttpFoundation\\Response;use Symfony\\Component\\Routing\\Annotation\\Route;
class HelloController extends AbstractController{ #[Route('/hello/{name}', name: 'hello_page')]
