Data Validation in PHP: From Built-in Functions to Professional Libraries

Data validation is one of the cornerstones of a secure and stable web application. PHP offers many approaches: from simple built-in functions to powerful libraries implementing the Chain of Responsibility pattern and supporting complex validation scenarios. In this article, we will cover three popular tools for validation in PHP: Respect\\Validation, Symfony Validator, and Aura.Filter, as well as remind you of the language's built-in capabilities.

1. PHP Built-in Functions

Before connecting third-party libraries, it's worth remembering that PHP provides basic tools for filtering and validating data:

  • filter_var() — validation and sanitization of data using filters (email, URL, integer, etc.)
  • preg_match() — validation using regular expressions
  • empty(), is_numeric(), strlen() — simple checks
  • ctype_alpha(), ctype_digit() — character set validation

Example of using filter_var:

<?php$email = "user@example.com";if (filter_var($email, FILTER_VALIDATE_EMAIL)) {    echo "Email is valid";} else {    echo "Invalid email";}?>

2. Respect\\Validation

Respect\\Validation is one of the most popular libraries for validation in PHP. Its main advantage is a readable, chainable syntax (fluent interface) and a huge number of ready-made rules (over 100).

Installation

composer require respect/validation

Usage Example

<?phpuse Respect\\Validation\\Validator as v;

$user = [ 'name' => 'Ivan', 'email' => 'ivan@test.com', 'age' => 25, 'website' => 'https://example.com'];

$validator = v::key('name', v::stringType()->length(2, 50)) ->key('email', v::email()) ->key('age', v::intType()->between(18, 120)) ->key('website', v::optional(v::url()));

try { $validator->assert($user); echo "Data is valid!";} catch (\\Respect\\Validation\\Exceptions\\NestedValidationException $e) { print_r($e->getMessages());}?>

The library supports custom error messages, nested array validation, and allows combining rules via allOf(), oneOf(), and noneOf().

3. Symfony Validator

The Symfony Validator component is part of the Symfony ecosystem but can also be used standalone. It is an industry standard for validating complex data structures with support for annotations, XML, and YAML configurations.

Installation

composer require symfony/validator

Example Using Attributes (PHP 8+)

<?phpuse Symfony\\Component\\Validator\\Validation;use Symfony\\Component\\Validator\\Constraints as Assert;

class User{ #[Assert\\NotBlank] #[Assert\\Length(min: 2, max: 50)] public string $name;

#[Assert\\NotBlank] #[Assert\\Email] public string $email;

#[Assert\\NotBlank] #[Assert\\Positive] #[Assert\\LessThan(150)] public int $age;}

$user = new User();$user->name = 'Ivan';$user->email = 'ivan@test.com';$user->age = 25;

$validator = Validation::createValidatorBuilder() ->enableAttributeMapping() ->getValidator();

$violations = $validator->validate($user);

if (count($violations) === 0) { echo "Validation passed!";} else { foreach ($violations as $violation) { echo $violation->getPropertyPath() . ': ' . $violation->getMessage() . ""; }}?>

Symfony Validator supports validation groups, cascading validation
