Testing in C# (.NET): Overview of Key Frameworks and Tools

Quality testing is an integral part of developing reliable software on the .NET platform. The C# ecosystem has many mature frameworks and utilities that help automate code verification at all levels: from unit tests to integration and UI tests. In this article, we will review the main tools, their features, and provide practical usage examples.

Main Frameworks for Unit Testing

The choice of a framework for unit testing in .NET often comes down to three main candidates: xUnit, NUnit, and MSTest. All of them support attributes for defining tests, assertions, and running from the command line or IDE.

xUnit.net

A modern, actively developing framework created by the author of NUnit. It features a minimalist design, abandoning the [TestFixture] attribute in favor of constructors for initialization. It integrates perfectly with .NET Core and .NET 5+.

using Xunit;

public class CalculatorTests{ [Fact] public void Add_ShouldReturnSum_WhenTwoNumbersAreProvided() { // Arrange var calculator = new Calculator(); int a = 5, b = 3;

// Act int result = calculator.Add(a, b);

// Assert Assert.Equal(8, result); }

[Theory] [InlineData(2, 3, 5)] [InlineData(0, 0, 0)] [InlineData(-1, 1, 0)] public void Add_ShouldHandleVariousCases(int a, int b, int expected) { var calculator = new Calculator(); int result = calculator.Add(a, b); Assert.Equal(expected, result); }}

Key features: [Fact] for regular tests, [Theory] with [InlineData] for parameterized tests, built-in support for asynchronous tests.

NUnit

One of the oldest frameworks, widely used in enterprise projects. It provides a rich set of attributes ([SetUp], [TearDown], [TestCase]) and flexible mechanisms for managing test context.

using NUnit.Framework;

[TestFixture]public class CalculatorTests{ private Calculator _calculator;

[SetUp] public void Setup() { _calculator = new Calculator(); }

[Test] [TestCase(1, 2, 3)] [TestCase(10, -5, 5)] public void Add_ShouldReturnCorrectSum(int a, int b, int expected) { int result = _calculator.Add(a, b); Assert.That(result, Is.EqualTo(expected)); }}

Differences: requires the [TestFixture] attribute for the class, uses Assert.That(...) with a constraint model, making assertions more readable.

MSTest

A framework from Microsoft, built into Visual Studio. It is easy to learn but less flexible than xUnit or NUnit. Often used in projects where company-wide standardization is important.

using Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting;

[TestClass]public class CalculatorTests{ [TestMethod] public void Add_ShouldReturnSum() { var calculator = new Calculator(); int result = calculator.Add(2, 3); Assert.AreEqual(5, result); }}

Libraries for Mock Objects and Stubs

To isolate the code under test from external dependencies (DB, API, file system), mock frameworks are used. In .NET, the most popular are Moq, NSubstitute, and FakeItEasy.

Moq

The leader in popularity. It allows you to easily create dynamic mock objects using lambda expressions.

using Moq;using Xunit;

public class OrderServiceTests{ [Fact] public void PlaceOrder_ShouldCallRepository_WhenVali
