What is Hibernate ORM?
Hibernate is a popular object-relational mapping (ORM) library for the Java language that simplifies the interaction between an application's object-oriented model and relational databases. It automatically converts data from SQL tables into Java objects and back, freeing the developer from writing large amounts of routine JDBC code.
Why is Hibernate needed?
The main goal of Hibernate is to reduce the amount of boilerplate code and speed up development. Instead of manually writing SQL queries, processing ResultSet, and managing connections, you work with regular Java objects (POJOs). The library also solves the problem of mismatch between object and relational models (Object-Relational Impedance Mismatch) by providing mechanisms for caching, lazy loading, and transaction management.
How to install Hibernate?
To install Hibernate in a Maven project, add the dependency to the pom.xml file:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.hibernate.orm</groupId>
<artifactId>hibernate-core</artifactId>
<version>6.3.1.Final</version>
</dependency>For Gradle use:
implementation 'org.hibernate.orm:hibernate-core:6.3.1.Final'You will also need a driver for your database (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, or H2).
Main features
- Automatic mapping: linking Java classes to tables via annotations or XML.
- HQL (Hibernate Query Language): an object-oriented query language similar to SQL but working with entities.
- Criteria API: a type-safe way to build queries without writing strings.
- Caching: built-in first and second level cache mechanisms to improve performance.
- Transaction management: integration with Java Transaction API (JTA) and local transactions.
Java code example
Let's create a simple User entity and perform a save operation:
// Entity
@Entity
@Table(name = "users")
public class User {
@Id
@GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.IDENTITY)
private Long id;
private String name;
private String email;
// getters and setters
}
// Saving the object
SessionFactory factory = new Configuration()
.configure("hibernate.cfg.xml")
.addAnnotatedClass(User.class)
.buildSessionFactory();
Session session = factory.getCurrentSession();
session.beginTransaction();
User user = new User();
user.setName("Ivan");
user.setEmail("ivan@example.com");
session.persist(user);
session.getTransaction().commit();
factory.close();When to use Hibernate?
Hibernate is ideal for projects that require complex work with relational databases: enterprise applications, web services, systems with a large number of interconnected entities. However, for simple projects with minimal queries or when full control over SQL is needed (e.g., in high-load systems), alternatives such as JOOQ or MyBatis should be considered.
