TypeScript Community Chooses the Best Libraries of the Year: 2024 Results

The annual vote among TypeScript developers has concluded, and the community has determined the best libraries and tools of 2024. Thousands of developers from around the world participated in the survey, evaluating projects based on criteria of convenience, performance, documentation, and popularity. We have gathered the main winners in key categories.

Category: Frameworks and Runtimes

The undisputed leader remains React — it garnered over 40% of the votes. In second place, Next.js firmly established itself, continuing to grow its audience thanks to improved support for server components. Third place went to Astro — praised for its build speed and minimal JavaScript bundle.

Category: Utilities and Data Handling

  • Zod — a library for schema validation in TypeScript. It surpassed the old reliable Yup thanks to type safety and ease of integration.
  • tRPC — a tool for creating type-safe APIs without codegen. Developers note that it "kills" REST and GraphQL in small and medium-sized projects.
  • Prisma — an ORM for working with databases. It won the "Best Developer Experience" nomination for its auto-generation of types and clear syntax.

Category: Testing and Code Quality

Here, an unconditional victory went to Vitest — a modern test runner compatible with Jest but operating many times faster. Its closest competitor was Playwright, which has become the standard for end-to-end testing. Third place went to Biome — a fast linter and formatter created as an alternative to ESLint and Prettier.

Category: State Management

  • Zustand — a lightweight state management library that surpassed Redux Toolkit thanks to its minimalistic API and lack of boilerplate.
  • TanStack Query (formerly React Query) — took second place. Developers value it for caching and automatic server synchronization.
  • Jotai — atomic state management that is gaining popularity in projects with complex logic.

Category: Build and Infrastructure

The biggest surprise of the year was the leadership of Bun — a fast JavaScript runtime that also serves as a bundler and package manager. It overtook Vite, which had been the absolute favorite for the past two years. Third place went to Turborepo — a tool for monorepos that helps speed up builds in large projects.

Why This Matters for TypeScript Developers

The voting results are not just a popularity ranking. They show trends: the community is increasingly choosing tools with native TypeScript support, minimal dependencies, and high performance. If you develop in TypeScript, it's worth looking into these libraries — they will save time and improve code quality.

All data is based on a survey conducted in the official TypeScript community in December 2024. The full list of nominees is available on the project website.
