TypeScript conquers developers' hearts again: StackOverflow 2024 survey results

The annual StackOverflow developer survey is one of the most anticipated events in the IT world. In 2024, the results once again confirmed the growing popularity of TypeScript. This programming language, which is a strict typed superset of JavaScript, not only entered the top three but also firmly holds the position of the most "loved" language among respondents.

According to the survey data, which involved over 65,000 developers worldwide, TypeScript took second place in the "Most Loved" category, second only to Rust. Moreover, it is in the top 5 most used languages, confidently surpassing such "giants" as Java and C#.

Why has TypeScript become so beloved by developers?

TypeScript's success is no accident. Here are the key factors that made it a favorite:

  • Static typing. The main advantage of TypeScript is the ability to catch errors at compile time rather than during code execution. This reduces the number of bugs in production and makes code more predictable.
  • Improved code readability and maintainability. Clear types serve as documentation for the developer. Even months later, it's easy to understand what data a function accepts and what it returns.
  • Compatibility with the JavaScript ecosystem. Any JavaScript code is valid TypeScript code. You can gradually introduce typing into existing projects without rewriting everything from scratch.
  • Powerful development tools. IDEs (e.g., VS Code) combined with TypeScript offer incredibly smart autocompletion, refactoring, and code navigation, which significantly speeds up development.
  • Demand in the job market. Knowledge of TypeScript has become a mandatory requirement for many Frontend and Fullstack developer positions, especially in large projects.

Trends and the future of TypeScript

The popularity of TypeScript continues to grow. If 5 years ago many were wary of it, today it is the de facto standard for development on Angular, React, and Node.js. Large companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Airbnb actively use TypeScript in their key products.

Interestingly, in the StackOverflow 2024 survey, TypeScript also took leading positions in terms of salaries. Developers proficient in this language are among the highest-paid specialists, making learning it not only enjoyable but also economically beneficial.

For those just starting their programming journey or wanting to deepen their JavaScript knowledge, TypeScript is a logical and extremely useful next step. It doesn't replace JavaScript but makes it a more reliable and professional tool.
