Go labor market: salaries have grown, demand is not falling
Based on the results of the first half of 2024, the average salaries of Go developers (Golang) in Russia increased by 20% compared to the same period last year. This data is provided by the Habr Career portal based on an analysis of more than 5,000 vacancies and resumes. In conditions of a shortage of qualified personnel, employers are willing to pay premiums for knowledge of this language.
Go (or Golang) is a language created within Google to solve problems of high-load systems. Today it has become the standard for backend, microservices, cloud technologies, and DevOps tools (Docker, Kubernetes are written in Go). It is this specialization that ensures salary growth.
Key figures of the Go market
- Median salary of a Go developer: 280,000 RUB (+20% compared to 2023)
- Junior (up to 1 year): 120,000 – 160,000 RUB
- Middle (1–3 years): 250,000 – 350,000 RUB
- Senior (3+ years): from 450,000 RUB to 600,000 RUB (including options in IT giants)
- Highest demand: Moscow and St. Petersburg (65% of vacancies), but regions are actively growing (Kazan, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg)
Why are employers paying more?
Analysts cite three main reasons why salaries of Golang specialists are growing faster than the market as a whole (+20% vs. +10-12% for Java and Python):
- Personnel shortage: There are 3-4 times fewer good Go developers than vacancies. Companies are poaching specialists from related stacks (Python, C++, Rust).
- Project migration: Many legacy systems in Python and Java are being migrated to Go to improve performance and reduce infrastructure costs.
- Import substitution: Russian banks, fintech startups, and the public sector are actively writing new code in Go, as it is licensed under BSD and does not depend on sanctions restrictions.
What do you need to know to get a high salary?
Employers are looking not just for a "Go developer," but for a specialist with a specific set of skills. Top 5 requirements from vacancies with above-market salaries:
- Deep knowledge of Goroutines and channels — the ability to write efficient concurrent code.
- Experience with microservice architecture (gRPC, Protobuf, RabbitMQ/Kafka).
- Knowledge of cloud platforms (Kubernetes, Docker, Yandex Cloud / AWS).
- Working with databases (PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, Redis) and the ability to optimize queries.
- Code review and CI/CD skills (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions).
Forecast for the second half of 2024
Analysts expect further growth in salaries of Go developers by another 10-15% by the end of the year. The main drivers are the development of AI/ML tools (many write the wrapper in Go) and the need for high-load services for fintech and e-commerce. At the same time, competition for the Senior level remains low — fewer than 2 candidates apply for one vacancy
