Kotlin 2.1 Released: What Changed in the New Release

The JetBrains team has officially unveiled the Kotlin 2.1 release — another significant update to the popular programming language. This release brings long-awaited experimental features, performance improvements to the K2 compiler, and expanded capabilities for Kotlin Multiplatform. Let's break down the most important changes that every developer should know.

Main Innovations in Kotlin 2.1

1. Experimental Feature: Guard Conditions in when

One of the most anticipated improvements is the introduction of guard conditions within when blocks. You can now add additional checks directly in branches:

when (value) {    is String if value.length > 5 -> println("Long string")    is Int if value > 0 -> println("Positive number")    else -> println("Something else")}

This makes the code more concise and readable, eliminating nested if statements.

2. K2 Compiler Improvements

Kotlin 2.1 continues the stabilization of the new K2 compiler, first introduced in version 1.9. In this release:

  • Faster builds — K2 performance has increased by 15–20% for large projects.
  • Improved incremental compilation — recompilation of changed files is now even faster.
  • More precise error messages — diagnostics have become clearer, especially for complex generic types.

3. Stabilization of Non-local break and continue

The long-awaited ability to use break and continue inside lambda expressions with non-local returns is now fully stable. This simplifies working with loops in a functional style:

list.forEach { item ->    if (item == null) return@forEach // equivalent to continue    // processing}

4. Kotlin Multiplatform: New Capabilities

For those using Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP), version 2.1 introduces:

  • Improved iOS support — issues with Swift and Objective-C integration have been fixed.
  • Experimental Wasm (WebAssembly) support — you can now compile Kotlin code to Wasm for running in the browser.
  • New Gradle plugin — simplifies the setup of multiplatform projects.

5. Other Improvements

  • Improved sealed class support — the compiler now more accurately checks exhaustiveness of when expressions.
  • New functions in stdlib — useful extension functions for working with collections and strings have been added.
  • Increased stability — dozens of bugs related to coroutines and reflection have been fixed.

How to Update to Kotlin 2.1

The update is available through official channels. For IntelliJ IDEA and Android Studio, simply change the Kotlin version in the build.gradle.kts file:

kotlin("jvm") version "2.1.0"
