Labor Market for Kotlin Developers: Salaries Soared by 20%

The IT market in 2025 continues to surprise. According to the latest research from hh.ru and specialized job aggregators, average salary offers for Kotlin developers increased by 20% compared to the same period last year. This significantly outpaces the average salary growth in other programming languages (Java, Python, JavaScript), which was about 8-12%. Why exactly did Kotlin become the record holder and how have the real numbers changed? We break it down in our article.

Numbers: How Much Kotlin Developers Earn in 2025

Analysts from the service "My Circle" and the SuperJob portal provide the following average figures by grade for specialists working with Kotlin:

  • Junior (0–1 year of experience): from 80,000 to 120,000 rubles (+18% compared to 2024).
  • Middle (1–3 years of experience): from 180,000 to 280,000 rubles (+22% compared to 2024).
  • Senior (3–6 years of experience): from 320,000 to 500,000 rubles (+20% compared to 2024).
  • Team Lead / Architect: from 500,000 to 700,000 rubles and above (+25% compared to 2024).

At the same time, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the upper salary limit is 10-15% higher than in the regions. For example, a senior Kotlin developer in the capital can earn up to 550,000 rubles. In remote vacancies (currently more than 60%), the difference between regions is practically leveled out — companies are willing to pay Moscow rates for a good specialist from any city.

Why Kotlin? Three Main Reasons for the Growth

The sharp jump in salaries is not accidental. Here are the key drivers that fueled the demand for Kotlin developers:

1. Departure of Western vendors and import substitution in mobile development. Many Russian companies (Sber, T-Bank, Yandex, VK) are actively rewriting their Android applications from Java to Kotlin. This has become an industry standard. Moreover, in government projects requiring high reliability and security, Kotlin is increasingly chosen as the primary language for the backend (for example, in Ktor and Spring Boot with Kotlin).

2. Shortage of senior specialists. Kotlin is a relatively young language (released in 2016). Experienced developers with 5+ years of experience are extremely scarce on the market. Companies are willing to overpay for experts who can not only write code but also design architecture and implement coroutines and Flow.

3. Growing popularity of multiplatform development (KMP). Kotlin Multiplatform allows using one codebase for Android, iOS, and the web. This sharply increases the value of a specialist: now a Kotlin developer can replace an entire team of two or three people. Companies save resources and are willing to pay such a universal specialist significantly more.

What This Means for Beginners and Pros

For junior specialists, the current trend is great news. Entry into the profession has become more expensive. If previously interns agreed to 40-50 thousand, now even beginners can aim for 80-100 thousand. True, competition among juniors remains high: there are about 15-20 resumes for one junior vacancy.
