The PHP Market is Heating Up: Developer Salaries Increased by 20%

According to a fresh report from the analytical portal “Habr Career”, in the last quarter of 2024, the median salary for PHP developers in Russia increased by 20% and reached 210,000 rubles for senior specialists. This is one of the highest growth rates among all programming languages, even surpassing Python and JavaScript.

Experts attribute this jump to several factors that have dramatically changed the demand for PHP programmers in the labor market.

Why is PHP Back on Top?

Contrary to stereotypes about a “dying” language, PHP is experiencing a rebirth. The main drivers of salary growth:

  • Mass exodus of Western CMS and frameworks. Companies are actively migrating from outdated solutions to modern PHP stacks (Laravel, Symfony). This requires qualified personnel ready to rewrite legacy code.
  • Shortage of middle and senior specialists. The junior level is oversaturated, but there is a catastrophic shortage of experienced developers who can work on high-load projects. Employers are willing to pay premiums for “hands.”
  • Increase in project complexity. PHP is increasingly used not only for simple websites but also for corporate ERP systems, API services, and fintech solutions. Complexity pays more.
  • Remote work and the global market. Russian PHP developers are actively entering foreign platforms (Upwork, Toptal), where rates in dollars or euros are also pulling up local salaries.

Who Earns the Most?

Analytics show a clear gradation by grade:

  • Junior (0-1 year): 80,000 – 120,000 rubles (10% growth over the quarter).
  • Middle (2-4 years): 150,000 – 220,000 rubles (18% growth).
  • Senior (5+ years): 250,000 – 400,000 rubles (25% growth).
  • Team Lead / Architect: from 400,000 rubles and above (30% growth due to rarity).

The highest increase is among Symfonists (Symfony developers) and specialists in Laravel. Knowledge of modern frameworks increases the salary offer by an average of 15-20% compared to “pure” PHP.

What Does a PHP Developer Need to Know in 2025?

To keep up with the market and qualify for higher salary ranges, experts advise mastering:

  • Modern backend stack: Docker, Kubernetes, RabbitMQ, Redis.
  • Databases: in addition to MySQL — PostgreSQL and ClickHouse.
  • PHP 8.3/8.4: new language features (attributes, enum, readonly properties) — a mandatory minimum.
  • DevOps skills: CI/CD, working with clouds (AWS, Yandex Cloud) — this pays extra.

The forecast for the next six months is optimistic: analysts expect even more
