JavaScript (Node.js) 2025 Curriculum: Where to Start

JavaScript has long moved beyond the browser. Thanks to the Node.js platform, it has become one of the main languages for server-side development, creating APIs, chatbots, and even desktop applications. If you have decided to master Node.js in 2025, we have prepared a clear curriculum for you. It is suitable for both beginners and those who want to systematize their knowledge.

Stage 1: JavaScript Basics (3-4 weeks)

Without a solid foundation, moving forward is pointless. Node.js is the same JavaScript, but with environment-specific features. Start with the fundamentals:

  • Data types and variables: let, const, primitives, reference types;
  • Control structures: conditions, loops, operators;
  • Functions: declaration, arrow functions, closures;
  • Objects and arrays: array methods, destructuring, spread/rest;
  • Asynchrony: callbacks, promises, async/await — this is critically important for Node.js.

Stage 2: Introduction to Node.js (2-3 weeks)

Once you are confident writing pure JS, move on to the server side:

  • Installing Node.js and npm (package manager);
  • Module system: require/import, creating your own modules;
  • Built-in modules: fs, path, http, events;
  • Working with streams and buffers;
  • Creating a simple HTTP server without frameworks.

Stage 3: Frameworks and Databases (4-6 weeks)

In real projects, people rarely write from scratch — they use ready-made solutions:

  • Express.js — the most popular framework: routing, middleware, request handling;
  • Databases: PostgreSQL (SQL) or MongoDB (NoSQL). Start with one, preferably MongoDB via Mongoose;
  • REST API: endpoint design, validation, error handling;
  • Authentication: JWT, bcrypt, sessions.

Stage 4: Advanced Topics (2-3 weeks)

To stand out in the market, add to your toolkit:

  • TypeScript — static typing makes code more reliable;
  • Testing: Jest or Mocha;
  • WebSockets (Socket.io) for real-time functionality;
  • Docker — application containerization;
  • Basics of CI/CD and deployment (Heroku, Render, VPS).

Stage 5: First Projects

Theory without practice is forgotten. Here are three ideas for your portfolio:

  • Todo application with authentication and a database;
  • Real-time chat using Socket.io;
  • Blog API with CRUD operations and pagination.

The 2025 curriculum involves not only knowledge of syntax but also an understanding of architecture, security, and performance. Node.js continues to actively evolve — in particular, the popularity of Bun and Deno is growing, but classic Node.js remains the industry standard. Start small, and in 3-4 months you will be able to create full-fledged web
