CodeCanvas Studio: what does the new IDE for Java developers offer?

The market for Java development tools has a new player. A group of enthusiasts from the open-source community has presented the beta version of CodeCanvas Studio — a lightweight yet functional development environment aimed at both beginners and experienced programmers. We took it for a first test drive and are sharing our impressions.

At first glance, CodeCanvas Studio resembles a hybrid of IntelliJ IDEA and Visual Studio Code, but the developers emphasize that it is a completely independent product written in Java 17. The main feature is a built-in AI assistant that not only suggests code but also helps analyze compilation errors.

Key IDE Features

  • Intelligent autocomplete — operates based on static analysis and takes into account the context of the entire project, including dependencies from Maven and Gradle.
  • Built-in debugger — allows you to set breakpoints, view the call stack, and variable values in real time.
  • Support for JDK 8–21 — works out of the box with the latest versions of Java, including preview features (records, sealed classes).
  • Easy start — installation takes less than 2 minutes, the IDE does not require complex setup. Everything works immediately after unpacking the archive.
  • Dark and light themes — the interface adapts to user preferences.

Why should you pay attention?

Compared to bulky environments like Eclipse or NetBeans, CodeCanvas Studio consumes significantly less RAM: about 512 MB when working with a small project. At the same time, performance does not suffer — even when refactoring code with hundreds of classes, the interface remains responsive.

The integration with the version control system was especially pleasing: Git works "out of the box," and a plugin needs to be installed for working with SVN. The built-in terminal supports all standard commands, and both Maven and Gradle are available for building projects.

AI Assistant: helper or marketing?

The built-in neural network really helps: it suggests method implementations, writes tests, and even comments on code. True, it only works with an internet connection. In offline mode, only basic autocomplete is available. Nevertheless, this is an excellent learning tool: beginners can immediately see correct design patterns.

Disadvantages noticed immediately

  • Lack of support for JavaFX Scene Builder — you will have to use third-party solutions for GUI applications.
  • No built-in memory profiler — you need to connect VisualVM to analyze leaks.
  • The release is still raw: minor bugs occur when working with large files (over 5000 lines).

First impressions summary

CodeCanvas Studio is a worthy alternative for those looking for a fast, modern IDE with AI support. The product is especially suitable for students and developers working on small and medium-sized projects. We will follow the updates and will definitely report on the final version.
