Major Open Source Java Project Seeks Contributors
The Java developer community has received an important announcement: one of the key open source projects in the ecosystem — Apache Hadoop — has officially announced it is seeking new contributors. The project, which underpins many modern big data processing systems, is facing a shortage of active developers and is now opening its doors to anyone willing to contribute.
Why is this important?
Apache Hadoop is not just a library, but a whole platform for distributed data storage and processing. It is used by thousands of companies worldwide, from startups to giants like Facebook, Netflix, and LinkedIn. However, despite the project's maturity, it constantly requires improvements: bug fixes, performance optimization, support for new Java versions, and adaptation to modern cloud architectures.
Currently, there are fewer than 20 active committers on the project. This is not enough to keep the code in perfect shape and respond to community requests in a timely manner. Therefore, the Hadoop core team has reached out to the community with a call to join.
Who are they looking for?
Contributors are needed not only from experienced architects but also from beginners. The project is open to developers of any level who are willing to spend 5 to 10 hours per week. The main requirements are:
- Solid knowledge of Java 8+ — understanding of multithreading, networking, and I/O is mandatory.
- Basic understanding of distributed systems — familiarity with the concepts of MapReduce, HDFS, and ZooKeeper is desirable.
- Ability to work with Git — pull requests, code review, and working with an issue tracker.
- English at the level of reading technical documentation — all communication in the project is conducted in English.
Specialists in testing, documentation, and performance are especially welcome. If you have never participated in open source but want to try, this is an excellent opportunity, as the project has a mentoring program for newcomers.
What will you be doing?
Tasks are divided by complexity: from "good first issues" for beginners to complex architectural changes. Here are examples of active tasks:
- Migrating legacy code to Java 11/17.
- Optimizing NameNode operation to reduce memory consumption.
- Adding support for a new data compression type.
- Fixing bugs in YARN (Resource Manager).
- Writing unit tests and improving code coverage.
How to join?
It's very simple. Just go to the official Apache Hadoop GitHub repository, select an issue labeled help wanted or good first issue, comment that you are taking the task, and start developing. Once you finish, submit a pull request, and the maintainers will review it within a few days.
Additionally, the project has an active mailing list for developers and a channel on Slack. There you can ask any questions and get help from experienced members.
If you've been wanting to try your hand at open source and contribute to a project that changes the world of big data, now is the time. Apache Hadoop is waiting for you!
