Rust Conference: Main Announcements 2025
The annual RustConf 2025 conference, held this week in Berlin, set the tone for the language's development in the coming years. The Rust Foundation team and core developers presented a number of significant announcements that will change both the compiler itself and the ecosystem. We have gathered for you the key news that every Rust developer should know.
1. Long-Awaited LTS Release
The main surprise was the announcement of the first-ever Rust release with long-term support (LTS). Rust version 1.80 will be supported for 24 months with guaranteed security patches and critical bug fixes. This is an important step for enterprise users who previously hesitated to adopt Rust due to its rapid update cycle. The LTS version will be available for download in October 2025.
2. New Borrow Checker – Polonius
After several years of development in the nightly status, Polonius is finally stable. The new borrow checker significantly simplifies working with borrows: it handles multiple mutable references more flexibly and eliminates about 40% of false positives that plagued beginners. According to the developers, Polonius will be enabled by default in Rust 1.82. This will make code cleaner and learning the language less painful.
3. Stabilization of async fn in Traits
One of the most requested features is finally leaving the experimental stage. Starting with Rust 1.84, developers will be able to declare asynchronous methods directly in traits without workarounds through associated types. This simplifies writing polymorphic asynchronous code and speeds up work with libraries like Tokio and Async-std. It is expected that many web frameworks (Actix, Rocket) will release updated versions immediately after stabilization.
4. Standard Library Expansion
New useful types and methods have been added to std:
- CursorMut — a mutable cursor for Vec and String (similar to Cursor, but with write capability).
- LazyCell — lazy initialization without Mutex, for cases where data is computed once.
- Vec::dedup_by_key — removing duplicates by key without manual iterations.
- HashMap::entry_modify — atomic modification of an entry by key.
These additions reduce the number of dependencies on external crates, simplifying code maintenance.
5. Ecosystem: cargo-script and Documentation Improvements
The cargo-script tool is now integrated into the main cargo. You can now run single .rs files as scripts (e.g., for task automation) without creating a full project. The command cargo script main.rs automatically loads dependencies from Cargo.toml embedded in comments.
Additionally, a transition to a new documentation engine has been announced, which generates more readable pages with type navigation and built-in usage examples. The updated doc.rust-lang.org will launch in beta mode next month.
Conference Summary
RustConf 2025 showed that the language is confidently moving towards maturity without losing its core values — safety and performance. The LTS release, stabilization of async in traits, and the new
