Large Open Source C++ Project Seeks Contributors: New Opportunities for Developers
The open source software development community has received an important announcement: one of the largest open source projects written in C++ has announced a large-scale recruitment of contributors. We are talking about the LLVM project — a powerful compiler infrastructure that underlies many modern tools, including Clang, LLD, and others.
LLVM has been a key element of the programming ecosystem for many years, used both in academia and industry. However, like any large project, it requires a constant influx of fresh energy and ideas. Due to the expansion of functionality and plans to support new architectures, the LLVM team invites developers from around the world to join the work.
What is offered to contributors?
- Development of new optimizations — improving the performance of generated code for various platforms.
- Support for new languages and standards — adapting Clang for the latest versions of C++ and C, as well as experimental languages.
- Bug fixing and refactoring — improving the stability and readability of the codebase.
- Documentation — creating and updating technical documentation for developers and users.
Requirements for participants
- Strong knowledge of C++ (C++14/17/20 standards).
- Understanding of compiler architecture and low-level programming.
- Experience with Git and code review systems (Phabricator or GitHub).
- Willingness to communicate in English — all correspondence and documentation are conducted in English.
For newcomers to the project, a mentorship program is provided: experienced maintainers help to understand the code, submit the first patch, and integrate into the community. Participants interested in working on backends for new processor architectures (RISC-V, ARM, WebAssembly) are especially welcome.
How to join?
To get started, simply visit the official project website llvm.org and check out the "Getting Started" section. It describes the steps for building the project, offers starter issues, and links to developer chats on Discord and IRC. The project team also holds regular online meetups and workshops for new contributors.
Participating in such a project is not only an opportunity to contribute to the industry but also a great way to improve your C++ skills, learn best development practices, and make useful contacts. If you have been wanting to try your hand at open source, now is the perfect time.
