C++ Conference 2024: Main Announcements and New Language Features

From September 15 to 19, 2024, the annual C++ conference — CppCon 2024 — was held in Honolulu (Hawaii). This is a key event for the developer community, where the most important announcements regarding the future of the language were presented. The PythonLib editorial team has gathered the most significant news that will change the way you work with C++ in the coming years.

C++26 Standard: First Drafts and Key Innovations

The main event of the conference was the announcement of the finalization of the C++26 standard draft. The final version of the standard is expected to be released in 2025. Key innovations include:

  • Improved Modules — modules now support more flexible export and import configuration, speeding up compilation of large projects.
  • Standard Pattern Matching — a long-awaited feature for pattern matching, simplifying the handling of complex data types.
  • Extended constexpr — more functions can now be executed at compile time, including work with containers and algorithms.
  • Standard Coroutines (C++26 Coroutines) — simplified syntax and new primitives for asynchronous programming.

Memory Safety: A New Perspective on C++

One of the central topics of the conference was memory safety. The C++ committee announced the launch of a safety profile initiative. It plans to introduce new attributes and analyzers that will help detect memory leaks and undefined behavior at compile time. This is especially important for projects in finance, aviation, and autonomous transportation.

An experimental mode for the Clang compiler was also announced, which enables strict safety checks for C++ code.

New Tools for Developers

Several important tools were presented at CppCon 2024:

  • cppfront 2.0 — a new version of the experimental compiler that translates C++2 syntax (a simplified version of C++) into modern C++.
  • Improved CMake — now supports C++26 modules, simplifying the build process for projects with a modular architecture.
  • Integration with Rust — official support for calling Rust functions from C++ via FFI (Foreign Function Interface) was announced.

Community and the Future of C++

The conference also discussed the issue of attracting new developers. The C++ committee announced the launch of a mentorship program for students and juniors, as well as the publication of a series of free online courses on modern C++ (starting with C++20).

Additionally, it was announced that the next CppCon conference will be held in Berlin (Germany) in September 2025, highlighting the global nature of the community.

These announcements make C++ an even more powerful and secure language for building high-load systems, game engines, financial platforms, and embedded solutions. Stay tuned for updates on PythonLib — we will be publishing detailed guides on the new features of C++26.
