Swift Conference (iOS/macOS): Main Announcements of 2024

On November 25–27, 2024, the annual conference for developers in the Apple ecosystem — Swift Developer Conference 2024 — was held in Cupertino, California. The event gathered over 3,000 participants offline and another 10,000 online. This year, Apple focused on performance, new tools for SwiftUI, and, most importantly, the long-awaited release of Swift 6.0. We have compiled the main announcements that are already changing the approach to iOS and macOS development.

Swift 6.0: Stability and a New Level of Concurrency

The main news of the conference is the official release of Swift 6.0. The new version of the language features:

  • Full support for Strict Concurrency Checking — now the compiler detects data races and incorrect thread handling at build time. This makes code safer and reduces the number of runtime bugs.
  • Improved Ownership system — Swift 6.0 introduces new modifiers borrowing and consuming, giving developers precise control over memory without sacrificing performance.
  • New Swift Package Manager 6.0 — now supports parallel dependency downloads and automatic caching, speeding up project builds by 20–30%.

According to Apple, Swift 6.0 is fully backward compatible with versions 5.x, so the update can be performed without fear of breaking legacy code.

SwiftUI 5: Declarative Interface Becomes More Powerful

Following the language, the framework for building interfaces — SwiftUI 5 — was also updated. Key innovations include:

  • New modifier .glassBackgroundEffect() — allows you to easily create a glassmorphism effect for visionOS and macOS without complex overlays.
  • Built-in Drag & Drop support — now dragging elements between applications and within a single window is implemented in 3 lines of code.
  • Improved tables and collections — Table and Grid now feature lazy loading and virtualization, making work with large data volumes (up to 1 million rows) smooth even on older devices.

Xcode 16: AI Assistant and New Debugger

The integrated development environment Xcode 16 also received significant upgrades:

  • AI assistant Swift Copilot — a built-in code generator based on machine learning. It offers autocompletions, refactoring, and even writes tests based on natural language descriptions.
  • New debugger Swift Debugger Pro — supports reverse debugging, allowing you to "rewind" program execution to find the causes of crashes.
  • Swift Trace tool — real-time visualization of asynchronous code execution, especially useful when working with async/await.

What Does This Mean for Developers?

The conference showed that Apple continues to actively invest in Swift as the primary language for its entire ecosystem. Swift 6.0 makes the language safer and more
