From Idea to a Million Downloads: The Story of a Swift Startup
In the world of mobile development, Swift has long become the standard for the Apple ecosystem. However, creating a truly successful startup in this language is no easy task. Today, we tell the story of the «BrightCanvas» team, which went from a garage to the top 10 of the App Store in the «Productivity» category in two years.
How did it all begin?
In 2022, three graduates of MIPT decided to solve a problem familiar to every designer and developer: inconvenient tools for rapid interface prototyping on macOS. Existing solutions were either too complex or cost an arm and a leg. Thus, the idea of SketchFlow was born — a lightweight UI/UX editor with SwiftUI integration.
- First version — written in Swift 5.7 and SwiftUI in 4 months.
- Beta test — 500 developers from the SwiftLang.ru community helped find critical bugs.
- Launch on Product Hunt — took 3rd place of the day with 1200 upvotes.
Why did Swift become the key to success?
The choice of Swift was deliberate. Firstly, the language allows writing safe and fast code with a minimal entry barrier. Secondly, native integration with Xcode and SwiftUI made it possible to create an interface that «breathes» together with macOS Ventura and iOS 16. As the startup's CTO Alexey admits: «We didn't want to write in Objective-C — that's the past. Swift gave us modern async/await, macros, and strict typing. Without this, we wouldn't have met the deadline».
Key development stages
- 6 months: MVP release — 10,000 installs, first paid subscriptions ($4.99/month).
- 12 months: CoreML integration for smart color scheme suggestions. Growth to 50,000 users.
- 18 months: Launch on iPadOS and macOS. Support for Swift Packages for extensions.
- 24 months: 500,000+ downloads, revenue $1.2 million/year. Investment from the «Apple Seed Capital» fund.
Tips for future startup founders
The BrightCanvas team shares three main lessons:
- Don't be afraid of SwiftUI. Many consider it «raw», but since version 4.0 it is stable for products. 80% of our app's code is in SwiftUI, and this allowed us to cut development time in half.
- Test on real devices. The simulator doesn't show lags on an iPhone 8. Buy a couple of used iPhones — it will pay off.
- Publish Swift libraries. We open-sourced a JSON parser for SwiftUI. This attracted 3000 stars on GitHub and the first beta testers.
What's next?
Currently, BrightCanvas is preparing a version for visionOS (Apple Vision Pro) and launching AI-based layout generation from text prompts. And their first Swift developer, an intern from Tomsk, now leads a department of 15 people. As the startup's CEO Dmitry says: «Swift is not just a language. It's a community where everyone can create something great. The main thing is to start».
