Main Announcements of the PHP 2024 Conference: What Awaits Developers?

In December 2024, the annual PHP Community Summit conference was held in San Francisco, gathering over 2,000 developers from around the world. The event served as a platform for announcing key changes in the PHP ecosystem, as well as for presenting new versions of popular frameworks. In this article, we have compiled the most important announcements that will impact every PHP developer's work.

1. PHP 8.4: A Revolution with Property Hooks

The main event of the conference was the announcement of the release of PHP 8.4, scheduled for March 2025. The key innovation is the long-awaited property hooks, which allow overriding the behavior of class properties without manually writing getters and setters. This simplifies the code and makes it more readable.

  • Property hooks — a new syntax for managing property access (similar to C#).
  • Improved JIT compiler — performance increase of 15-20% for computational tasks.
  • Deprecation of old functions — final removal of outdated methods from the core.
  • Attributes for types — the ability to annotate parameter types more flexibly.

2. Laravel 11: A New Queue Engine

Taylor Otwell, the creator of Laravel, presented the beta version of Laravel 11. The key novelty is a built-in queue engine based on Redis Streams, which replaces the outdated Beanstalkd. This will speed up background job processing by 2-3 times and simplify deployment.

Also, Laravel 11 will feature automatic test generation based on routes and controllers, reducing the time spent on writing unit tests.

3. Symfony 7.1: Asynchronous HTTP Clients

Fabien Potencier, the leader of the Symfony project, announced the release of Symfony 7.1 with support for asynchronous HTTP requests based on ReactPHP. This allows executing multiple requests simultaneously without blocking script execution. It is especially useful for microservice architectures and API gateways.

  • Async HttpClient — non-blocking requests with connection pool support.
  • Improved integration with Doctrine ORM — a new migration manager with automatic rollback.
  • PHPStan compatibility — built-in static analysis support for all components.

4. Tools: PhpStorm 2025 and Static Analysis

JetBrains announced the release of PhpStorm 2025 with a built-in AI assistant. It will offer real-time code refactoring and detect security vulnerabilities on the fly.

Additionally, the PHPStan community presented version 2.0 with generics support for custom collections and fully automatic type inference for complex expressions.

5. Security and the Future of PHP

A separate section of the conference was dedicated to security. A new PHP Security Alliance initiative was presented — a union of core developers and companies (Zend, Automattic, Laravel) for rapid response to vulnerabilities. A patch release is planned.
