Benchmark 2025: Node.js vs Go, Rust, Python and Java — who won?

In early 2025, the developer community received fresh results from a large-scale benchmarking effort, comparing JavaScript (Node.js) with its main competitors: Go, Rust, Python and Java. The tests were conducted under typical web server loads, computations, and I/O operations. The results were unexpected for many.

Testing conditions

  • Hardware platform: Intel Core i9-14900K, 64 GB DDR5, NVMe SSD.
  • Language versions: Node.js 22.3, Go 1.23, Rust 1.80, Python 3.13, Java 22 (GraalVM).
  • Scenarios: REST API (JSON serialization/deserialization), AES-256 encryption, large file reading, parallel requests (1000 connections).

Performance results

  • Request processing speed (RPS): Rust showed the best result (85,000 rps), Node.js took second place (72,000 rps), Go — third (68,000 rps). Java (GraalVM) — 62,000 rps. Python — 12,000 rps.
  • Memory consumption: Rust — 45 MB, Go — 65 MB, Node.js — 110 MB, Java — 180 MB, Python — 95 MB.
  • Response time (p99): Node.js showed the lowest latency among interpreted languages — 12 ms. Rust — 8 ms, Go — 10 ms.

Node.js was particularly impressive in scenarios with a large number of concurrent connections. Its event-driven architecture and libuv allowed it to efficiently handle thousands of requests without significant latency increase.

Where does Node.js win?

  • Development and prototyping speed: — 2-3 times faster than Rust or Go, thanks to the huge npm ecosystem package.
  • Flexibility: — one language for client and server, which lowers the entry barrier and speeds up deployment.
  • WebSockets and real-time applications: — Node.js is traditionally strong in chats, online games, and streaming.

Achilles' heel

Node.js's single-threaded nature remains a bottleneck for CPU-intensive tasks (rendering, heavy computations). In these scenarios, Rust and Go outperform it by 3-5 times. Python, despite its low speed, wins in machine learning tasks thanks to libraries like NumPy and TensorFlow.

Final recommendations

  • Choose Node.js if you need a quick start, real-time functionality, and microservices with high I/O load.
  • Go and Rust — for systems programming, high-load computations, and embedded.
  • Python — for data analysis, low-load backend, and prototypes.
  • Java — for enterprise solutions where ecosystem maturity is important.

Thus, in 2025, Node.js remains one of the best compromises between performance and development convenience, especially in the web environment. However, for tasks critical to computation speed or memory, it is worth looking at Rust and Go.
