Java entered the top of the most loved programming languages according to Stack Overflow 2024

The annual Stack Overflow developer survey is one of the most authoritative studies in the IT world. In 2024, the community confirmed once again: Java not only remains in demand but also confidently ranks among the most loved programming languages. We explain what lies behind this success and what conclusions developers can draw.

What the Stack Overflow 2024 survey showed

More than 65,000 developers from 185 countries took part in the survey. Java took an honorable place in the top 5 languages that respondents called "most loved" — meaning those they would like to continue writing code in the future. At the same time, Java also remains in the top three most used languages alongside JavaScript and Python.

  • Loved language: Java is in the top 5 by percentage of positive feedback (more than 68% of developers using Java noted that they would like to continue working with it).
  • Demand stability: The share of Java developers among respondents has not declined for the third consecutive year (about 30% of respondents).
  • Corporate sector: Java remains the primary language for backend, Android development, and enterprise solutions.

Why is Java in the top again?

Experts highlight several key reasons that explain the community's love for Java in 2024:

  • Modern updates. Java 21 and Java 22 releases brought long-awaited features: Virtual Threads, pattern matching, record patterns, and improved sealed classes. This made the language more concise and performant.
  • Ecosystem and tools. IntelliJ IDEA, Spring Boot, Maven, Gradle — all these tools continue to actively evolve, simplifying development and testing.
  • Microservices and clouds. Java integrates well with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP). This makes it indispensable for modern architectures.
  • Community and learning. A huge number of educational materials, courses, and open-source projects in Java attract beginners and maintain the interest of experienced developers.

What does this mean for developers?

Java's entry into the top loved languages is a signal to the market: learning Java is still profitable and promising. The language is not only not becoming obsolete but is actively adapting to new challenges — from AI/ML (Deep Java Library, Tribuo libraries) to high-load systems.

For those just starting their journey in IT, Java remains one of the best choices thanks to its strong typing, extensive documentation, and demand in the job market. Experienced developers can delve into reactive programming (Project Reactor, WebFlux) or switch to Kotlin, which is also compatible with the JVM.

Summary

The Stack Overflow 2024 survey clearly shows: Java is not an "old" language, but a mature and dynamically developing platform. The community's love for Java is based on real advantages: stability, performance, and a huge ecosystem. If you are not yet familiar with Java — now is a great time to start. And if you already write in Java — you are in good company.
