Kotlin Community Chooses Best Libraries of the Year: Overview of Kotlin Multiplatform Awards 2024 Winners

The annual Kotlin Multiplatform Awards has summed up the results for 2024. This year, the developer community voted for projects that had the greatest impact on the Kotlin ecosystem — from multiplatform mobile development to server-side solutions. We have gathered the key winners so you can stay up to date with the best tools for your next project.

Who chose the winners and how?

The voting took place on the JetBrains platform and in the Kotlin community's social networks. Participants selected libraries in 6 categories. A total of over 15,000 votes were cast. The winners are projects that not only solve specific problems but are also actively developed, have quality documentation, and a strong community.

Winners in Key Categories

  • Best Library for Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP): Ktor Client — an HTTP client that works on Android, iOS, JVM, and JS. Thanks to its lightweight nature and modular architecture, it has become the standard for network requests in KMP projects.
  • Best UI Framework: Jetpack Compose Multiplatform — a declarative UI from Google and JetBrains. This year it gained iOS support and stabilization for desktop platforms, making it the top choice for cross-platform interfaces.
  • Best Serialization Library: kotlinx.serialization — a built-in library for JSON, Protobuf, and other formats. Ease of use and full integration with the Kotlin compiler secured its first place.
  • Best DI (Dependency Injection) Tool: Koin — a lightweight DI framework that requires no code generation and is perfectly suited for multiplatform projects.
  • Best Testing Library: MockK — a mocking library written specifically for Kotlin. It supports coroutines, lambdas, and companion objects.
  • Best Server-Side Library: Ktor Server — an asynchronous web framework that perfectly complements Ktor Client and provides a unified stack for client-server development in Kotlin.

Why This Matters for Developers

The community's choice is not just a rating. It is a signal about which technologies are stable, well-documented, and have active support. If you are just starting to learn Kotlin Multiplatform or want to update your stack, these libraries will be a reliable foundation. For example, the combination of Ktor Client + kotlinx.serialization + Compose Multiplatform allows you to create a full-fledged application for Android, iOS, and the web with minimal code duplication.

Trends of 2024

The main trend is consolidation of multiplatform capabilities. Most winners actively support KMP. The second important point is the growing popularity of Compose Multiplatform: it is gradually replacing traditional XML layouts and SwiftUI analogs in cross-platform projects. There is also noticeable demand for lightweight DI solutions (Koin) and tools that do not generate unnecessary code (kotlinx.serialization).
