Swift Community (iOS/macOS) Chooses Best Libraries of the Year
Each year, the Swift developer community holds a vote to highlight the most useful, stable, and innovative libraries for the Apple ecosystem. In 2024, winners were announced in five key categories. We've gathered the results so you can update your tool stack for iOS and macOS development.
🏆 Best Networking Library: Alamofire 6
The perennial leader in networking — Alamofire — received an updated sixth version. Developers noted full support for async/await, improved WebSocket handling, and a new request interception system. Alamofire remains the de facto standard for REST APIs and file downloads.
🏆 Best SwiftUI Library: Composable Architecture (TCA) 2.0
Point-Free released the second version of TCA, which now supports SwiftUI navigation out of the box. Key innovations:
- Declarative routing without Coordinator
- Built-in support for Swift Testing
- Improved integration with Combine and Observation
The community highly appreciated the reduction in boilerplate code and the predictability of application state.
🏆 Best Testing Library: ViewInspector
For unit testing SwiftUI interfaces, the community chose ViewInspector. This library allows testing views without launching a simulator, checking states, modifiers, and nested elements. In 2024, support for SwiftUI 5 and iOS 18 was added.
🏆 Best Data Library: GRDB.swift
GRDB is a SQLite wrapper for Swift with a focus on type safety and concurrency. It won in the "Data Handling" category thanks to:
- Automatic migrations based on Swift models
- Support for Swift Concurrency (async/await)
- Integration with SwiftUI via @Query
GRDB outpaced Core Data and Realm in speed and convenience for small and medium-sized projects.
🏆 Best Animation Library: Lottie 4.0
After transitioning to SwiftUI, Lottie updated its API: animations from After Effects now play natively, without unnecessary bridges. Support for dynamic colors, smooth stopping, and vector rendering made Lottie indispensable for iOS designers.
⚡️ Special Prize: Swift Testing Framework
Although this is not a third-party library but an official Apple framework, the community recognized it as a "breakthrough of the year." Swift Testing replaced XCTest in most new projects — it is faster, more concise, and integrates better with Xcode 16.
The voting took place on Swift.org and GitHub repositories. All winners are available via Swift Package Manager (SPM) and are compatible with iOS 16+ and macOS 13+.
