New IDE with Java Support: First Look at a Powerful Tool for Developers

The market of development environments for Java has not experienced serious upheavals for a long time: IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse and NetBeans have firmly occupied their niches. However, the release of NovaStudio took place recently — a new IDE that promises to rethink the approach to writing Java code. The developers position it as a lightweight, yet functional alternative to heavyweight monsters. We decided to take a look at the new product and share our first impressions.

Key Features of NovaStudio

From the first launch, NovaStudio surprises with its speed. Loading takes less than 10 seconds, and the start window is minimalist: only a list of projects and a button to create a new one. But behind the simplicity lies serious functionality.

  • Smart Autocomplete: The IDE analyzes not only types but also the context of use. For example, if you are working with collections, it suggests iteration and filtering methods first.
  • Built-in Debugger: Supports breakpoints, call stack viewing, and dynamic modification of variable values. Everything works without lag even on large projects.
  • Git Integration: Visual diff tools, branch management, and interactive commits — all available directly from the interface.
  • One-Click Refactoring: Changing the name of a variable, method, or class happens instantly, with automatic updating of all references.

First Impression and Pitfalls

We tested NovaStudio on a small project using Java 17 and Spring Boot. The IDE performed excellently: the autocomplete is truly smart, and the debugger allowed us to quickly find an error in multithreaded code. However, it was not without drawbacks. Firstly, there are still few plugins — only official ones from the creators. Secondly, there is no built-in terminal, which may be critical for some developers.

Who is this IDE for?

NovaStudio is suitable both for beginners who are just starting to learn Java, and for experienced developers who value speed and minimalism. If you are tired of waiting for IntelliJ to load, or are looking for something fresh — it is definitely worth a try. Currently, the IDE is available in a free version for non-commercial use.
