New TypeScript framework breaks performance records

Moscow, March 12, 2022 — The TypeScript developer community is buzzing: a new open-source framework TurboNode, created by a team of former V8 and Node.js engineers, has announced results that challenge the dominance of Go and Rust in high-load systems. In an official benchmark published on GitHub, TurboNode showed 2.6 million processed HTTP requests per second on standard hardware (AMD EPYC 64 cores, 128 GB RAM), which is three times higher than a similar application in Go (870 thousand requests/sec).

The secret to performance lies in using JIT compilation at the bytecode level and a new memory allocator "ZeroGC", which, according to the developers, reduces garbage collection time by 98% compared to V8. "We didn't try to rewrite the engine. We simply took standard TypeScript and made it work with memory as efficiently as C, but without losing type safety," commented Alexey Petrov, team lead of the TurboNode project, in an interview with our portal.

Initial tests from independent experts confirm: in tasks related to JSON parsing and microservice routing, TurboNode outperforms Fastify (Node.js) by 4.2 times, and Deno by 2.8 times. However, skeptics note that the framework is still raw: it lacks built-in ORM and WebSocket support, and documentation is only available in English. "This is a powerful tool for REST APIs, but don't expect it to replace Express or NestJS tomorrow," warns Maria Sokolova, an architect at Yandex.Cloud.

The release of the first stable version (v1.0) is scheduled for June 2022. The project has already garnered 8.7 thousand stars on GitHub and received a grant from Cloudflare. For Pythonistas accustomed to asynchronicity via asyncio, TurboNode could be an interesting example of how TypeScript catches up with Python in convenience but pulls ahead in speed. The full code is available under the MIT license.
