PHP 2025 Learning Plan: Where to Start for Beginners

PHP remains one of the most in-demand languages for web development. Despite the emergence of new technologies, 77% of all websites run on PHP, including WordPress, Laravel, and Symfony. In 2025, learning PHP means gaining access to a huge market of job vacancies and freelance projects. But where to start so you don't drown in a sea of information? We have put together a clear learning plan.

Stage 1: Syntax Basics (2–3 weeks)

The first step is to master the basics. Don't try to write complex projects right away. Focus on the foundation:

  • Variables and Data Types — strings, numbers, arrays, boolean values.
  • Conditional Statements — if, else, switch.
  • Loops — for, while, foreach.
  • Functions — declaration, arguments, return.
  • Working with Forms — GET and POST requests.

The best resource to start with is the official PHP documentation and interactive trainers like PHP Sandbox. The main rule: write code every day for at least 30 minutes.

Stage 2: Working with Databases (3–4 weeks)

PHP is inextricably linked with databases. Without this skill, you won't be able to create dynamic websites. Learn:

  • MySQL/MariaDB — SQL basics: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE.
  • PDO — secure database connection from PHP, protection against SQL injections.
  • MVC Architecture — separating logic into model, view, and controller.

Try creating a simple application: a blog or a task list. This will solidify the theory in practice.

Stage 3: Modern Frameworks (4–6 weeks)

In 2025, writing "pure" PHP without frameworks is considered bad practice. Frameworks speed up development and improve security. Choose one of the two leaders:

  • Laravel — the most popular PHP framework. Ideal for beginners thanks to its convenient documentation and built-in tools (Eloquent ORM, Blade templates).
  • Symfony — more strict and modular. Suitable for large enterprise projects.

Start with Laravel: it's easier to learn and has a huge community. Take the official Laravel Bootcamp — it's a free course from the framework's creators.

Stage 4: API and REST (2–3 weeks)

Modern web applications rarely work in isolation. Learn to create REST APIs:

  • JSON and XML — data exchange formats.
  • HTTP Methods — GET, POST, PUT, DELETE.
  • Authorization — JWT tokens, OAuth2.

Try writing a simple API for notes or a weather service. This will boost your confidence and open the path to full-stack development.

Stage 5: Tools and Ecosystem (1–2 weeks)

To become a professional PHP developer, master additional tools:

  • Composer — dependency manager. No modern project can do without it.
  • Git
