Major open-source Swift project (iOS/macOS) seeks contributors

The Apple developer community is back in the spotlight: one of the largest open-source projects written in Swift has announced a massive recruitment of contributors. We are talking about the SwiftNIO framework — a high-performance library for network programming that underlies many server-side solutions in Swift and is also actively used in the iOS and macOS ecosystem.

The project, developed under the auspices of the Swift Server Work Group (SSWG), invites developers of all levels — from beginners to experienced engineers — to contribute to the code, documentation, and testing. Why this is important and how to join — read in our article.

What is SwiftNIO and why is it important?

SwiftNIO is an asynchronous networking framework inspired by Java Netty. It allows you to create fast and reliable server applications, chats, proxies, and even custom protocols. The project is supported by Apple and the community, but new hands are needed for further growth.

  • Language: Swift 5.9+ (iOS 17+, macOS 14+).
  • License: Apache 2.0 — complete freedom of use.
  • Stars on GitHub: over 7,700.
  • Main modules: NIO, NIOHTTP1, NIOWebSocket, NIOFoundationCompat, and others.

What tasks await contributors?

The project team has identified several areas for beginners and experienced developers:

  • Documentation and examples: translation, writing tutorials, improving code comments.
  • Bug fixing: from simple (memory leaks, incorrect error messages) to complex (thread races).
  • Performance optimization: refactoring hot paths, improving memory management.
  • New features: protocol support (e.g., HTTP/3, QUIC), integration with Swift Concurrency.
  • Testing: writing unit tests and integration tests.

What do contributors gain?

Participating in such a project is not just working for the benefit of the community. Here is what you will gain:

  • Portfolio: contributing to a major open-source project is valued by employers worldwide.
  • Experience: working with asynchrony, multithreading, and network protocols.
  • Networking: communicating with core developers from Apple and other companies.
  • Certificates: after your first PR is accepted, you receive a contributor badge on GitHub.

How to get started?

The entry process is as simple as possible:

  1. Go to the SwiftNIO GitHub repository.
  2. Read CONTRIBUTING.md and CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md.
  3. Choose an issue with the good first issue or help wanted label.
  4. Fork the repo, write code, submit a Pull Request.
