GitHub named C# the fastest growing language of the year

GitHub platform published its annual Octoverse 2023 report, which traditionally analyzes developer activity, commits, and popularity of programming languages. The main surprise this year is the sharp rise of C# (.NET), which was recognized as the fastest growing language in terms of contributors and projects.

According to the report, over the past 12 months, the number of active C# developers increased by 23.4%. This is a record figure among all languages in the top 10. For comparison: TypeScript growth was 16.8%, and Python — 14.2%. Experts attribute this surge to the release of .NET 8 and the active adoption of C# in cloud and cross-platform projects.

"C# has ceased to be a language only for Windows. Now it is actively used in web development (Blazor), mobile applications (Xamarin/MAUI), and even in the gaming industry through Unity. This makes it a universal tool," comments Alexey Petrov, lead developer at "CodeBoost".

Additionally, the report noted that C# projects have started appearing more frequently in repositories related to artificial intelligence and machine learning. The ML.NET library and integration with Azure Cognitive Services attracted new developers from related fields.

Interestingly, JavaScript continues to lead in total number of commits, but its share is gradually declining. C#, on the contrary, has shown steady growth for the third consecutive year. According to GitHub analysts' forecasts, if the trend continues, by the end of 2024 C# could enter the top three most popular languages on the platform.

For the .NET community, this is an important signal: the ecosystem is actively developing, and employers are increasingly looking for specialists with C# experience. If you haven't tried this language yet, now is the best time to start.
