JavaScript (Node.js) Community Chooses Best Libraries of the Year

The results of the annual Node.js Community Awards 2024 vote have been summarized, where developers from around the world selected the most useful and popular libraries for the Node.js platform. This year, competition was particularly high: more than 50 packages made the shortlist, but only 10 received the title of "Best Library of the Year" in their categories.

The voting took place on the official Node.js community portal and on social networks. More than 15 thousand developers participated. Winners were determined based on three criteria: relevance, documentation quality, and contribution to the ecosystem.

Winners in Key Categories

  • "Best Framework" — Express.js. Despite its venerable age, the framework remains the most sought-after tool for building server applications. In 2024, the team released version 5.0 with improved error handling and built-in TypeScript support.
  • "Best ORM" — Prisma. Winner for the second year in a row. Developers praise Prisma for its intuitive API, auto-generated types, and powerful migration tool.
  • "Best Validation Library" — Zod. Overtook Joi and Yup thanks to strict typing and full compatibility with TypeScript.
  • "Best Testing Tool" — Vitest. A young but already very popular framework that offers the speed of Vite and the familiar syntax of Jest.
  • "Best Logger" — Pino. The community's choice for minimal performance impact and support for structured logs.
  • "Best Date Library" — date-fns. Overtook Moment.js and Day.js due to modularity and excellent documentation.
  • "Best HTTP Client" — axios. A stable leader that received HTTP/2 support and improved timeout handling in 2024.

Trends of 2024

The organizers noted several important trends. First, almost 70% of winners have full TypeScript support. Second, developers are increasingly choosing lightweight libraries without unnecessary dependencies. For example, Pino and Vitest won precisely due to minimalism and high performance.

Also this year, a new category "Best AI Tool" was introduced for the first time. The winner was the LangChain.js library, which makes it easy to integrate language models into Node.js applications. This reflects the growing interest in AI solutions among the JavaScript community.

What Does This Mean for Developers?

The community's choice is not just an honorary list. It is a practical guide for everyone working with Node.js. If you are just starting a project or looking for stable tools for production, it is worth taking a closer look at the winners. Most of them are actively maintained, have hundreds of thousands of stars on GitHub, and thousands of projects using them in production.

The full list of winners and the recording of the award ceremony are available on the official Node.js Foundation website. Stay tuned for updates on pythonlib.ru — we will continue to tell you about the best tools from the world of JavaScript and Python.
