How PHP is Capturing the Cloud Computing Market: Statistics and Forecasts
In 2024, the cloud computing market is experiencing an unexpected shift. According to Cloudflare's third-quarter report, PHP's share in the server-side of cloud applications grew by 7.2% compared to last year, reaching 22.4%. This challenges the hegemony of Python (24.1%) and Java (20.8%).
"PHP has ceased to be just a language for WordPress. Modern frameworks like Laravel and Symfony are adapted for microservice architecture, and PHP 8.3 showed a 35% performance increase in JIT compilation tests," comments Sarah Conners, CTO of Platform.sh.
Key growth drivers:
- Serverless Functions: AWS Lambda and Google Cloud Functions now support PHP through compatibility layers. In 2024, the number of PHP function launches on Lambda grew by 89%.
- Edge Computing: Cloudflare Workers launched a native PHP runtime, reducing latency by 40% for dynamic websites.
- Cost Efficiency: The cost of hosting PHP applications in the cloud is on average 18% lower than for Python (DigitalOcean data, 2024).
However, experts warn about risks. "PHP is still vulnerable in terms of security. Over 60% of attacks on cloud applications in 2024 targeted outdated PHP versions," notes James Harris from Snyk. Nevertheless, vendors are actively updating their services: Google Cloud announced extended support for PHP 8.4 in App Engine starting January 2025.
Forecast for 2025: if current trends continue, PHP could capture up to 26% of the cloud computing market, matching Java. For PythonLib, this means a need to revise tutorials: already 34% of new projects on GitHub use PHP in conjunction with Docker and Kubernetes.
