TypeScript Community has chosen the best libraries of the year: results of the TypeScript Community Awards 2024
The annual TypeScript Community Awards, held with the support of the official TypeScript community and key players in the ecosystem, has summed up the results of 2024. This year, the voting gathered a record number of participants — over 12,000 developers from around the world. Winners were determined in three main categories: "Best Library of the Year", "Tool of the Year", and "Discovery of the Year". The results clearly demonstrate which technologies are currently in the focus of the TypeScript community.
Best Library of the Year: Zod
The library for declarative schema validation Zod received the title of "Best Library of the Year". This is no coincidence: Zod has been among the top 5 most downloaded packages in the npm registry for the second year in a row. Developers value it for:
- Simplicity and readability — schemas are declared in a functional style, which lowers the entry barrier.
- Full TypeScript support — type inference happens automatically, without the need to duplicate interfaces.
- Modularity — the library is easily extensible with custom validators.
Zod is actively used in Next.js, tRPC projects, and when creating API clients. According to GitHub data, the repository's star count grew by 40% over the year — reaching 25,000.
Tool of the Year: Biome
In the "Tool of the Year" category, Biome won by a large margin — a unified tool for code formatting and linting. It is positioned as a fast replacement for ESLint and Prettier, written in Rust. Key advantages:
- Speed — formatting large projects is 10–15 times faster than alternatives.
- Built-in support for TypeScript and JSX without additional plugins.
- Minimal configuration — follows community best practices "out of the box".
Biome is already integrated into the CI/CD pipelines of companies such as Vercel and Netlify. According to the State of JS 2024 survey, 18% of respondents switched to Biome within the past year.
Discovery of the Year: Hono
In the "Discovery of the Year" category, the web framework Hono (previously known as Ultraviolet) won. This lightweight framework for building APIs and server applications won developers' sympathies thanks to:
- Ultra-lightweight size — package size less than 20 KB (gzip).
- Support for multiple runtimes: Node.js, Deno, Bun, Cloudflare Workers.
- Performance — Hono shows results comparable to native solutions in Rust and Go.
Over the year, Hono's npm downloads grew 6 times — to 1.2 million per month. The framework is especially popular among developers of edge functions and microservices.
What does this mean for developers?
The award winners reflect key trends of 2024: the pursuit of minimalism and performance (Biome, Hono) and the need for reliable data validation (Zod). For beginner TypeScript developers, these libraries will be an excellent start: they are not overloaded with unnecessary abstractions, are well-documented, and are actively supported by the community.
