Kotlin Community has chosen the best libraries of the year: results of the Kotlin Community Awards 2024

The annual Kotlin Community Awards has summed up the results of another season. This year, developers from around the world voted for the most useful, innovative, and actively developing libraries in the Kotlin ecosystem. We have gathered the main winners in key categories so you can stay up to date with the best tools for working with this language.

Winners by category

🥇 Best library for Web development — Ktor 3.0

The framework from JetBrains has once again confirmed its status as the main tool for building asynchronous servers and clients in Kotlin. In version 3.0, developers noted improved support for Kotlin Multiplatform, built-in plugins for working with WebSockets, and a new routing system.

🥇 Best library for Data Engineering — Kotlin DataFrame

The library for working with tabular data, inspired by pandas, has become the discovery of the year. It allows processing CSV, JSON, and Excel files directly in Kotlin code using strong typing. Particular interest was sparked by integration with Apache Arrow and support for lazy computations.

🥇 Best development tool — Kotlin Multiplatform Wizard

The community-driven KMP project template generator received the award for its simplicity and speed. With it, you can create a multiplatform project supporting Android, iOS, Desktop, and Web in just minutes.

🥇 Best library for Dependency Injection — Koin 4.0

The lightweight DI framework continues to gain popularity. Version 4.0 brought support for Compose Multiplatform, improved performance, and a new module for working with navigation.

Special nominations

  • Best library for testing — MockK 2.0. The mocking tool written in Kotlin received an updated DSL and coroutine support.
  • Best library for working with databases — Exposed 0.50. The ORM from JetBrains gained new column types and improved SQL generation.
  • Breakthrough of the year — Skiko (Kotlin Multiplatform Graphics). A library for working with 2D graphics that became the foundation for Compose Desktop and Compose Web.

Why is this important for Kotlin developers?

Community voting is not just a formality. It shows real trends: Kotlin is increasingly moving beyond Android. The winners in the Data and Web categories confirm that the language is becoming a universal tool for backend, analytics, and cross-platform development. The growth of libraries for Kotlin Multiplatform is especially encouraging — this means the ecosystem is becoming mature and ready for industrial use.

The full list of nominees and voting details are available on the official Kotlin Community Awards website. If you haven't tried the winning libraries yet, now is the perfect time to start — many of them are already available on Maven Central and fully compatible with the latest versions of Kotlin.
