Who is faster in 2025? Comparative benchmark of Java and its main competitors

In 2025, Java turns 30 — a solid age for a programming language. However, despite the emergence of younger and trendier competitors (Go, Rust, Kotlin, Python with JIT compilers), Java continues to hold strong positions in enterprise development, backend, and Big Data. But what is Java's real performance compared to other languages? We analyzed the latest benchmarks and are ready to share the results.

For the sake of a clean experiment, popular cross-language tests (Computer Language Benchmarks Game, TechEmpower Web Framework Benchmarks) and community measurements were used. Key metrics: execution speed (CPU tasks), memory consumption, and web server throughput.

Key benchmark results for 2025

  • Java vs Go: Java (with the new ZGC and JIT optimizations) shows nearly identical speed to Go on CPU tasks — a difference of less than 5% in favor of Java. However, Go consumes 15-20% less RAM in simple microservices. Java wins in complex enterprise systems due to its mature ecosystem.
  • Java vs Rust: Rust is the absolute leader in speed and memory. It outperforms Java by 1.5-2 times on low-level computations and uses 3 times less RAM. But Java excels in development speed and cross-platform compatibility. Rust remains the choice for systems programming, while Java is for application software.
  • Java vs C++: C++ is still 20-30% faster than Java in raw computations, but the gap is narrowing thanks to improvements in the JIT compiler (GraalVM). Java wins in memory safety (no segmentation faults) and code portability.
  • Java vs Python: Python (even with PyPy or Cython) loses to Java by 10-50 times on CPU tasks. However, in 2025, Python dominates in AI/ML, where computation speed is often compensated by GPU acceleration. For backend, Java remains unequivocally faster.
  • Java vs Kotlin: Kotlin (on the JVM) shows nearly identical performance — a difference of less than 2%. The choice between them is a matter of syntax and conciseness, not speed.

Why isn't Java losing ground?

Despite Rust or C++ being faster on individual tasks, Java wins due to:

  • Ecosystem maturity: a huge number of libraries, frameworks (Spring, Hibernate, Quarkus), and monitoring tools.
  • JIT performance: modern JVMs (OpenJDK 21+, GraalVM) automatically optimize code for specific hardware, eventually catching up to native languages.
  • Scalability: virtual threads (Project Loom) in 2025 allow handling millions of concurrent connections without performance degradation.

Conclusion: If you need maximum performance per megabyte of memory — choose Rust. If prototyping and development speed — choose Python. But for a reliable, predictable, and fast enterprise solution, Java remains the best choice in 2025. Especially given the active development of GraalVM and virtual threads.
