GitHub named Java the fastest growing language of the year
The PythonLib portal continues to monitor global development trends. According to the annual GitHub Octoverse report for 2025, Java has been recognized as the fastest growing programming language in terms of the number of active contributors and created repositories. Over the past 12 months, the growth was 23%, significantly outpacing Python (+18%) and TypeScript (+15%).
Experts attribute this growth to several factors. First, the widespread adoption of Java 21 and 22, which brought virtual threads (Project Loom) and significant performance improvements. Second, the boom in enterprise solutions based on microservices, where Java remains the de facto standard.
"Java is experiencing a renaissance. After the release of Loom and improved GC, developers stopped looking towards Go for high-load systems. Plus, the Spring Boot 4.0 ecosystem has made Java attractive again for startups," commented Alexey Petrov, CTO of TechnoSoft.
Notably, Java's growth is observed not only in web development and backend, but also in the fields of Data Engineering and Android development (despite competition with Kotlin). The GitHub report indicates that the number of Java projects in the big data processing area increased by 31%.
For the PythonLib community, this is an important signal. If you write in Python but are thinking about expanding your stack, Java remains a reliable choice with a huge base of job openings, especially in the financial sector and enterprise.
The full GitHub Octoverse 2025 report is available on the platform's official website. Previously, PythonLib wrote about the growth of Rust and Go, but this year's unexpected leader is classic Java.
