New C# (.NET) Release: What Has Changed

The developer community has welcomed an important event — the release of the next stable version of the .NET platform and the C# language. The new release brings many improvements that affect both performance and security, as well as the convenience of writing code. Let's break down the main changes that everyone working with the Microsoft ecosystem should know.

Key Innovations in the C# Language

Language developers continue to move towards conciseness and expressiveness. The new release introduces several long-awaited features:

  • Primary Constructors for classes and structs — now you can declare constructor parameters directly in the type header, reducing boilerplate code. Previously, this feature was only available for records.
  • Collection Expressions — a new syntax for creating and initializing arrays, lists, and other collections. Instead of new int[] { 1, 2, 3 }, you can simply write [1, 2, 3].
  • Inline Arrays — improved work with fixed-size arrays, which is especially useful for low-level and high-performance scenarios.
  • Improved work with ref-structs — expanded capabilities for safe work with ref-fields and ref-returns, allowing you to write more efficient code without losing type safety.

Performance and Optimization

One of the main focuses of the new release is speed. The .NET team continues to optimize both the runtime and the compiler:

  • JIT compiler (RyuJIT) received a number of improvements for more aggressive optimization of loops and conditional branches.
  • Native AOT (Ahead-of-Time) has become more stable and supports more scenarios, including working with serialization and reflection. This allows creating even faster and more compact applications.
  • Garbage Collector (GC) has been optimized for working with large objects and reducing pauses in interactive applications.
  • Improved work with LINQ — some queries now execute faster without changing the code.

.NET Platform Updates

The platform as a whole has also received significant updates that simplify developers' lives:

  • .NET MAUI — rendering performance has been improved and many bugs related to working on iOS and Android have been fixed. Support for new control elements has been added.
  • ASP.NET Core — support for the latest HTTP/3 protocols has been implemented and work with gRPC has been improved. New tools for monitoring and metrics have appeared.
  • System.Text.Json — new attributes for fine-tuning serialization have been added, and performance when working with large JSON files has been improved.
  • Security — cryptographic libraries have been updated to meet modern standards, and protection against side-channel attacks has been improved.

Developer Tools

Development tools have not been left out either. Visual Studio and Rider have received updates that help you master new features faster:

  • New code actions and refactorings that automatically convert old code to the new syntax.
  • Improved analyzer support — now the IDE will warn you
