Go (Golang) — in the top three most loved languages according to Stack Overflow 2024

The annual Stack Overflow developer survey is one of the most authoritative snapshots of sentiment in the IT community. In 2024, over 65,000 programmers from around the world participated. And one of the main surprises is the rapid rise of Go (Golang) in the "most loved" languages ranking.

What did the survey show?

Go took 3rd place in the "Most Loved" category, behind only Rust and TypeScript. Additionally:

  • 72% of developers working with Go said they would like to continue using it.
  • Go overtook mainstream languages such as Python, Java, and C++.
  • In the "Most Wanted" category (the language respondents want to learn in the next year), Go also entered the top 10.

Why has Go become so beloved by developers?

Experts attribute the growing popularity of Golang to several factors:

  • Simplicity and code readability. Go has no complex syntax; generics were added only recently, but the language remains concise.
  • Built-in concurrency support. Goroutines and channels make writing multithreaded applications significantly easier than in Java or C++.
  • High performance. Go compiles to native code that runs almost as fast as C/C++, but with much faster compilation.
  • Cloud technology ecosystem. Kubernetes, Docker, Prometheus — all these key tools are written in Go. The demand for Go developers in DevOps and backend is enormous.

Go vs Python: an unexpected comparison

Interestingly, for the audience of the site pythonlib.ru, this trend is especially telling. Python remains a leader in overall usage (especially in Data Science and ML), but in the segment of high-load services and microservice architecture, Go is increasingly displacing Python. Many companies (e.g., Uber, Twitch) are rewriting critical sections from Python to Go.

What does this mean for developers?

  • For beginners: Go is an excellent second language after Python. It teaches strict typing and concurrency without pain.
  • For professionals: knowledge of Go increases market value — the average salary of a Go developer in 2024 is comparable to Rust and Scala.
  • For the community: the growing popularity of Go drives the development of libraries, frameworks (Gin, Echo, Fiber), and tools, making the language even more convenient.

Stack Overflow 2024 only confirmed what many intuitively felt: Go has ceased to be a "niche language for infrastructure" and has turned into a universal tool that is genuinely loved by those who write in it. If you haven't tried Golang yet — maybe it's time.
