JavaScript (Node.js) Conference: Main Announcements

This past weekend, the largest conference dedicated to the JavaScript ecosystem and the Node.js runtime environment was held online. The organizers gathered leading core developers, authors of popular libraries, and engineers from major technology companies. The main theme was the future of the platform: performance, security, and developer experience. We have collected the most important announcements for those who write on Node.js every day.

Key Performance Improvements

One of the central talks was a presentation by the team responsible for the V8 engine. The developers announced the implementation of a new JIT compiler that accelerates the execution of hot loops by up to 40% on synthetic benchmarks. In real-world applications, such as handling HTTP requests and working with databases, the improvement will range from 10% to 25% without any changes to the code.

Additionally, experimental support for asynchronous stack traces was announced, which will allow for more precise error catching in complex promise chains. This feature is expected to appear in one of the next major Node.js releases.

New Syntax and Language Features

There was also news from the world of JavaScript itself. Speakers presented the final specification for several long-awaited features:

  • Decorators — will officially enter the standard. They simplify metaprogramming and work with classes, especially in frameworks like NestJS.
  • Ternary operator for switch — a new syntax switch (true) with a more concise way of writing conditions.
  • Improved array handling — the groupBy and groupByToMap methods have finally moved from the proposal stage to release.

All of the listed features are already available in the current version of Node.js 22 when the --harmony flag is enabled.

Developer Tools and Security

A separate block of the conference was dedicated to tools. An updated Node.js Inspector was presented — the built-in debugger now supports remote debugging of containers and real-time memory profiling. A plugin for ESLint was also announced, which automatically checks for dependency vulnerabilities directly during code writing.

The Node.js security team announced the implementation of automatic scanning of npm packages at the publication stage. Malicious or outdated libraries will now be blocked before they enter the registry. This is an important step for an ecosystem that still suffers from supply chain incidents.

Future Plans

In the closing talk, core developers shared a roadmap for the next two years. The main directions are:

  • Full support for TypeScript "out of the box" without needing to install a separate compiler.
  • Integration with WebAssembly for performing high-load computations on the server.
  • Transition to the ESM module system by default in the next LTS release.

The conference once again showed that Node.js is not slowing down. The platform continues to evolve, focusing on speed, security, and developer convenience. Stay tuned for updates on PythonLib — we will keep you informed of all changes.
