From Garage to Unicorn: How a Node.js Startup Conquered the World
In the world of web development, you rarely encounter a story where the choice of a programming language becomes literally fateful for a business. Nevertheless, the story of the company «StreamFlow» (name changed) is precisely such a case. Founded in 2018 by two graduates of MIPT, the startup grew in four years from a tiny project in a garage to a company valued at 1.2 billion dollars. And all of this — thanks to the skillful use of JavaScript (Node.js).
The idea was simple: to create a platform for real-time video processing. Streamers, online cinemas, and educational projects needed a tool that could convert, compress, and deliver video without delays. However, the first prototypes in Python showed catastrophic performance when handling a large number of simultaneous connections. Then the team made a risky decision — to rewrite the product's core in Node.js.
Why was Node.js chosen?
- Event Loop and Asynchronicity. Node.js is ideal for I/O-intensive tasks. Each video conversion request did not block the thread, allowing thousands of operations to be processed in parallel.
- Unified Stack. Developers wrote both the server-side and client-side parts in JavaScript. This accelerated development by 2.5 times — there was no need to switch between different languages.
- Quick Start. Thanks to npm (package manager), the team assembled a prototype in a week that would have taken a month to write in other languages.
- Scalability. The architecture on Node.js clusters made it easy to scale capacity: from 100 users to 10 million in six months.
But the most interesting part came later. When the startup attracted its first investment of $500,000, it turned out that Node.js gave them not only a technical but also a business advantage. Investors noted that the team had chosen a trending technology for which there is a developer market. Finding Node.js specialists turned out to be significantly easier than, say, Go or Erlang specialists.
Key Growth Stages
2020 was a turning point. The COVID-19 pandemic caused an explosive growth in online streaming. The «StreamFlow» platform withstood loads of up to 500,000 concurrent viewers, while competitors on Python and Ruby crashed. The secret was in the well-thought-out architecture: they used microservices on Node.js and Redis for caching. Each service handled its own task (upload, conversion, delivery) independently.
By 2022, the company launched an API for third-party developers. Their SDK is now used in 15,000 projects worldwide. Moreover, they open-sourced part of the code, which created a strong community around the brand.
Lessons for Startups
- Don't be afraid to rewrite code. The «StreamFlow» team spent a month migrating from Python to Node.js, but it paid off by reducing server costs by 4 times.
- Use the ecosystem. npm, Express, Socket.io — ready-made solutions save time. Don't reinvent the wheel.
- Think about scaling from day one. Even if you have 10 users, design the architecture as if there will be a million.
