GitHub named Go the fastest growing language of the year
GitHub platform published its annual Octoverse 2022 report, and the main surprise was the leadership of the Go language (Golang). According to the data, the number of developers using Go grew by 28% compared to 2021. This makes it the fastest growing programming language among the top 10 GitHub rankings.
“Go is a language that solves real problems of scaling and performance, especially in cloud infrastructure and microservices,” comments Alexey Ivanov, lead cloud solutions developer at Yandex Cloud. “It's no surprise that it is outpacing Rust and TypeScript in terms of community growth rate.”
According to the report, Go took 7th place in the total number of contributors on GitHub, surpassing Ruby and C. At the same time, the number of public repositories in Go increased by 35% over the year. The main growth drivers are the Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud technology ecosystems, where Go is the de facto standard.
Interestingly, Go's growth is occurring against the backdrop of a general slowdown in the growth of the Python community (+15% in 2022 versus +22% in 2021). Nevertheless, Python remains the second most popular language after JavaScript. Experts attribute this to market saturation in data science and machine learning.
“Go is chosen by startups and large corporations for backend development, where compilation speed and ease of deployment are important,” adds Maria Sokolova, CTO of KodBot. “In 2023, we expect an even larger influx of developers from Java and Node.js.”
Among other trends in the report is the explosive growth in the use of artificial intelligence: repositories with AI tools (ChatGPT, Copilot) grew by 248%. However, it was Go that became the symbol of 2022 as the language that most effectively integrates with modern DevOps culture.
For Python developers who want to learn Go, the community recommends starting with the official tour tour.golang.org and projects based on Gin or Echo. “Go is not a replacement for Python, but an ideal partner for high-load systems,” the GitHub report concludes.
