Which C# (.NET) Frameworks Are Chosen for Production: 2024 Survey Results

The .NET ecosystem continues to actively evolve, and choosing the right framework for a production project is becoming an increasingly responsible task. A recent survey conducted among professional C# developers (over 1,500 respondents from Russia and CIS countries) provided an objective picture of preferences. We analyzed the data and highlighted key trends.

Production Leaders: ASP.NET Core and Blazor

The absolute favorite remains ASP.NET Core. It is used by 68% of respondents for web APIs and backend services. The main reasons are high performance, cross-platform capability, and configuration flexibility. In second place, with a significant gap, is Blazor (24%): developers value the ability to write interactive web interfaces in C# without JavaScript. Blazor Server is more often chosen for corporate intranet solutions, while Blazor WebAssembly is preferred for public SPAs.

Desktop and Mobile Platforms

In the desktop application segment, WPF (19%) and WinForms (13%) remain traditionally strong. However, a gradual transition to .NET MAUI is observed — it has already been adopted by 8% of respondents, and another 15% plan to migrate within a year. For mobile development, MAUI still lags behind Xamarin.Forms (remaining at 6%), but with the release of .NET 8, the gap is narrowing.

Unexpected Results

  • gRPC services in C# — 5% of production projects already use gRPC for high-load microservices, especially in conjunction with ASP.NET Core.
  • Azure Functions and AWS Lambda — serverless solutions in C# are chosen by 7% of developers, most often for event-driven architectures.
  • Unity for non-gaming applications — 2% of respondents use Unity in production (simulators, 3D data visualization).

Trends and Forecasts

Analysts highlight three key directions:

  • Consolidation on ASP.NET Core — the monolith is giving way to microservices, but the backend core remains on this framework.
  • Growth of Blazor in the enterprise segment — due to lowering the entry barrier for C# teams unwilling to learn JS frameworks.
  • MAUI catching up with WPF — by 2025, forecasts suggest MAUI could capture up to 20% of the .NET desktop market.
