GitHub named TypeScript the fastest growing language of the year
According to the annual GitHub Octoverse 2025 report, published on November 15, TypeScript has become the fastest growing programming language in terms of the number of new repositories and contributors. Over the past 12 months, the number of TypeScript projects has increased by 37%, outpacing Python (+28%) and Rust (+22%).
Key figures from the report:
- TypeScript ranks 3rd in total number of commits after JavaScript and Python.
- More than 12 million developers actively use TypeScript on GitHub (34% growth year-over-year).
- TypeScript's share in new Open Source projects reached 18% — an all-time high.
Experts attribute the explosive growth to the massive migration of major frontend frameworks (React, Angular, Vue) to strict typing. "TypeScript has ceased to be just an add-on over JavaScript — it has become the standard for enterprise development, where code reliability is critical," comments Alexey Ivanov, CTO of the company "CodeWithoutBorders".
Growth is especially noticeable in the backend development segment: frameworks NestJS and Deno have attracted millions of developers who previously chose Python or Java. According to a GitHub survey, 65% of respondents noted that TypeScript helped reduce the number of errors in production by 40%.
At the same time, analysts warn: rapid growth may slow down due to competition with Rust and Go in systems programming. However, in web development, TypeScript is likely to strengthen its position at least until 2027.
