Main Announcements of the Go (Golang) Conference

At the end of 2024, the annual GopherCon conference took place — one of the key events for all Go developers. The language development team and community leaders presented a number of important announcements that will determine the development of Golang in 2025. In this article, we have gathered the most significant innovations that are already available in Go 1.23 and are expected in Go 1.24.

Iterators and the iter package: a new paradigm for working with data

One of the most anticipated announcements was the stabilization of the iter package in the standard library. Go now supports iterators as a first-class concept. This means:

  • Convenient work with collections: you can now use range with custom types, not just slices and maps.
  • Lazy evaluation: iterators allow processing large datasets without loading everything into memory.
  • Clean code: built-in functions in the slices, maps, and sort packages now accept iterators, simplifying filtering and transformation.

Developers noted that this is a step towards a more functional programming style without sacrificing performance.

Improved Garbage Collector: fewer pauses, more control

The Go team announced significant progress in the garbage collector. The following improvements have been implemented in Go 1.23 and 1.24:

  • Reduced Stop-The-World (STW) time: garbage collection pauses have been reduced by 30-50% for most real-time services.
  • New Allocation Profiler: you can now visualize memory load in real-time via pprof.
  • Automatic adaptation: the GC now automatically selects the collection frequency based on available memory, reducing the number of out-of-memory errors.

These changes are especially important for microservices and high-load systems.

Telemetry: official tool for collecting metrics

The main surprise of the conference was the announcement of a built-in telemetry system. Go now includes an official tool for collecting anonymous usage metrics. Key points:

  • Optionality: telemetry is disabled by default. Developers decide for themselves whether to send data.
  • Transparency: all collected data is only function names and compiler versions, without source code.
  • Benefit for the community: the collected data will help the Go team find bugs faster and optimize popular scenarios.

The initiative sparked heated discussions, but most participants supported it under the condition of strict privacy.

Polymorphism and Generics: expanding capabilities

Go 1.24 is expected to expand support for generics. New features have been announced:

  • Wrapper types with methods: you can now define generic structures with methods, bringing Go closer to the abstraction level of Rust and C++.
  • Simplified work with errors: the new errors/support package will make it easy to create error chains with generics.

These changes make Go more attractive for writing complex libraries and frameworks.
