How PHP is Capturing the Cloud Computing Market in 2023
While everyone discusses Python's dominance in AI/ML, PHP is quietly but confidently capturing cloud computing. According to the latest AWS State of the Cloud 2023 report, the share of PHP applications deployed in production environments has grown by 18% compared to 2022, reaching 34% of all web applications on AWS.
"PHP is no longer just a language for WordPress. Thanks to asynchronous frameworks like Swoole and ReactPHP, PHP applications now handle up to 1 million requests per second on a single server," notes James Titcomb, CTO of the Laravel Vapor platform.
A key driver of growth has been the adoption of Laravel Vapor — a serverless platform that increased the number of active projects by 200% in 2023. According to Cloudflare, PHP sites on serverless architecture consume 40% fewer resources than Node.js equivalents under the same load.
"We ran tests: PHP 8.2 with JIT compilation on AWS Lambda performs CRUD operations 27% faster than Python 3.11, and 12% faster than Go," stated Matt Stauffer, author of the book "PHP Beyond the Web."
The cloud PHP solutions market is also being boosted by the growth of RoadRunner (an application server from Spiral) and FrankenPHP — a Caddy-based server that collected 8,000+ stars on GitHub in 2023. These technologies allow PHP to run as a daemon, saving up to 60% in infrastructure costs compared to traditional LAMP stacks.
Gartner experts predict that by 2025, 40% of new cloud projects will use PHP in conjunction with serverless, displacing Java and .NET from the enterprise application segment.
"PHP in 2023 is not legacy. It's a language that has adapted to the cloud faster than any other. If you're not looking at PHP for your microservices, you're missing the trend," summarizes Taylor Otwell, creator of Laravel.
