Go (Golang) Expands Horizons: Support for New Hardware Platform Announced

The Go (Golang) developer community has received a significant update: the latest compiler release adds support for a fundamentally new hardware architecture. This event opens up new development segments for the language — from embedded systems to high-performance computing on specialized equipment.

What Changed?

In the latest commit to the Go repository (golang/go) and the subsequent release, support was added for the LoongArch (LA64) architecture — a 64-bit instruction set developed by the Chinese company Loongson. Previously, Go supported major architectures (amd64, arm64, riscv64), but LoongArch is the first major addition in the last two years.

Key changes:

  • Full compilation support — standard library packages, including runtime, net, syscall, have been tested on LoongArch.
  • Optimization for LoongArch — architecture-specific instructions have been added to improve code performance.
  • cgo support — the ability to integrate with C libraries compiled for LoongArch.
  • Updated tooling — utilities go build, go test, and go vet now work correctly on the new platform.

Why Is This Important?

LoongArch is not just another architecture. It is actively used in industrial controllers, routers, POS terminals, and even supercomputers. For Go developers, this means:

  • Access to a new market — the ability to create server and tool applications for Loongson hardware without porting code.
  • Ecosystem unification — the same Go code can be compiled for x86, ARM, and LoongArch, simplifying CI/CD pipelines.
  • Security — LoongArch has hardware support for memory isolation, which is in demand in real-time systems.

How to Start Using It?

To build for LoongArch, simply install the latest version of Go (1.23+), then set the environment variables:

  • GOOS=linux (only Linux is supported for now)
  • GOARCH=loong64 (new architecture identifier)

Then you can run go build — the compiler will automatically generate an executable file for LoongArch.

What's Next?

Go developers have already announced plans to add LoongArch support for mobile builds (via gomobile) and WebAssembly (via GOOS=wasip1). Work is also underway to adapt popular frameworks (Gin, Echo) and databases (CockroachDB, TiDB) to the new architecture.

This step confirms Go's strategy as a language focused on multiplatform and industrial applications. For the PythonLib educational resource, this is an excellent opportunity to draw students' attention to Go — a language that goes beyond web development and conquers the hardware niche.
